I sure there is some favoritism, but

My preference is for early round light cars (I like the lighter weight, simpler trim and less complex emissions), but many people prefer the better crash protection of the square light cars, or the greater performance and uprated brakes/suspension of tii's.

Of course, if you're going to build a modified car (especially if you live somewhere that emissions testing isn't an issue) it's possible to build just about any combination you like up to a round light shell with square light nose and tail and tii running gear and suspension, or an E30 M3 or M20 engine.

The most modern of the roundies with the shorter (and easier to find bumpers). But then I have 3 - '72's at the moment. What kind of car are you looking to buy?

it's like barry said, it's really about what you want as an end product that will kind of dictate what it is your really going to want.

if you like the look of the square light or roundies, thats really your call, and really a decision you have to make.

personally i'm not a master mechanic (by any stretch of the imagination) so i went for a 72 02 (non tii) i went w/the carb because they are susposedly easier to tinker w/and less costly when you have stuff to fix. Also i tried to find a non-sunroof becuase i didn't want to have to worry about the sunroof.

but you have to think of it this way, the more you limit and what you want to track down exactly what you want the longer and harder your search is going to be. but it'll be worth the hunt! =)

the round light cars a lot, I also love my 75 square light. I am sure I will get a round light eventually, but I have had 4 square lights and loved them all (even the parts cars!) For me, right now, the "big bumpered square light" is perfect for the daily commute. I love all years, and appreciate them for what they are. I realize a lot of this debate is on good fun, but for the "new" people just getting into it: Buy what you like, it is better to have a clean solid square light than a rusty old round light! :-)

...and built my own 02 "just the way I wanted it"

Chassis build date April 12 1973:

1974-76 dashboard

1969 bumpers

1989 325iS seats

1989 325iS rear speakers

1974 door panels

1974 2002 turbo radiator

1980-something Volvo electric cooling fan

1989 325i battery cable

....I've done my last 2002 in my lifetime..so wanted it to be exactly what I like from each year....but round lights just make me swoon!
