Rough idle and engine backfiring???? (Update)

Recommended Posts

Car has been running well...until tonight. I was sitting in the drive thru and the idle suddenly drops from about. 800 rpm to 500 rpm. Sounds a bit odd like its missing. Pull off and the power is great. Revved to redline easily I didn't think much of it. I then pull into my garage and on deceleration i hear it backfiring. Just a few pops as I slow down. So i will look in the morning. What should I look for? It's got new plugs as of last week. Weber 38 284 cam Tii dizzy with pertonix.

Update....I popped off the distributor cap and took a look at the pertronix and found one cable slightly frayed and rubbing against the distributor shaft...hmmm...I'll have to rplace that unit...but I ALSO found a bad wire on cylinder #4. It had a section completely gone. So I patched up the pertronix, replaced the spark plug wires with red ones I got from Ireland I was waiting to install...put new plugs in because the new wires needed the plug tops that I discarded...and BAM fired up and ran smooth...I then took this time to readjust the carb...So far so good...we'll see how this works out...I'll be replacing the Pertonix unit soon.
