Alternator Belt Replacement

The job is really no biggy. Take a look at the old belt routing before beginning. Loosen the bolt that holds the alternator in the slotted bracket and the bolt on the inside of the alternator that connects it to the engine. Remove the old belt. Take your new belt and work it over the fan blades and into the crank pulley, engage the water pump pulley, then work into the pulley on the alternator. Sometimes a big screwdriver helps to get it over the last (alternator) pulley.

Then pull hard on the alternator, toward you, and tighten the bolt in the slotted portion of the bracket. Lastly, tighten the inboard alternator mounting bolt.

Check the belt for correct tension. It should deflect approx. ½" when you push in the middle part of the belt - half-way between the alternator pulley and the water pump pulley.

and squeeze it between the fan and the radiator. If you're paranoid about dinging the radiator fins, slip a thin piece of plastic or an aluminum offset litho plate in front of the radiator so the belt won't touch the fins.

Easy job. Just be prepared to check belt tension and retighten after a thousand miles or so, as the belt will stretch a bit after installation and use.

Cheers
