Depends on the state of tune, altitude, temperature, phase of the moon, and how good your hearing is.

A bone stock car that does not have its ignition too far advanced should run on regular. As you tune for more performance, you will need a higher grade.

Start with 87 grade. If you hear pinging under hard acceleration (sounds like BBs in the engine) then start working your way up to 89 and 93.

If you do hear pinging, back off the go pedal until it stops or you could hurt something. Then add some better gas at first opportunity.

As a point of reference, my car has a 292 cam, 9.5:1 compression, and a 38/38 downdraft carb, a medium state of tune. I use 89.
