Pacific Fuel Injection visit

For any Tii guys who wonder what equipment is used to bench test a Kugelfisher Fuel Injection pump, here are a few pics I took today while dropping off my K-Fish at Pacific Fuel Injection in South San Francisco. Owner Gus Pfister was kind enough to give me the grand tour.

I took a video of Gus bench testing a vintage Bosch injector from a Porsche but I won't be able to get it off my phone until I return home.

Hi Jim,

Your interview with Gus is terrific. I read it a few weeks ago and so I knew what to expect.

I went to PFI to drop off my injector and didn't want to impose on Gus. He was working alone in his shop, but was gracious and happy to demonstrate the test equipment and show me around the shop.

I didn't ask about buying spares, although I did ask if he had access to the molded injector pipes and fittings... which he did not.

Gus could really use an apprentice. It would be good to have a younger person learn the unique skills Gus possesses. While Gus is busy, the future potential for such a specialized business is constrained by the dwindling number of vehicles still running these aging injector pumps.

I was thinking the same thing.

It will be a lost art. How many people are there currently here in the US that do these Kfish and Spica pumps? Not many. Unfortunately, the demand is low, but it does exist.

What did you have done? What was the ballpark cost?

(I have a spare Kfish that I might want to take over sometime)

I had gus many years ago (maybe 5 now?) do a check of my Schnitzer/ALPINA race pump and at the same time some of the race "pencil" injectors needed a looking after. He basically tested and re-sealed my pump (cleaned it up a bit as well), tested my injectors (rebuilt one) $275-

There are a few of these places left here in the US. Fairchild Industries (Redding, CA), H&R Fuel Injection (Hans) (NY), Wes Ingram (WA), Gus at Pacific of course (SF, CA), Precision Automotive Research (Redszus) (IL), there also used to be a place called "Mechtronix" that used to do Bosch Racing pumps, no idea if they are still around. Regarding Gus, I had the same conversation with him back then (and he was pretty Old 5 years ago!), I was thinking how much fun it would be to take his business over in lieu of my sucky Construction Management gig (at the time), the economics of it with my overhead didn't pencil (without a lotto win). Still, the day I was there 4-5 packages showed up with Porsche pumps needing attention. He would starve it it were only Tii pumps he was waiting for, fortunately vintage Mercedes and Porsche pumps help supplement the BMW pumps. He is a great guy, lucky to have him so close by.
