I have been using the XR700 in my 02 since 1993 and have no issues with it. The conversion kit should contain everything sans coil. Installation kit will include correct shutter wheel, optical trigger and mounting hardware.

Edit: PN Crane 700-0231

.... Pertronix took a dump.

Jason, how does a Pertronix fail? Sorry about the n00b question but isn't it just a couple magnets and wires? (at least that's all it seemed to be when I installed mine).

While I haven't actually found a way to confirm the failure at the Pertronix unit (I'm so disgusted that I just parked it), We swapped plugs and wires all around, put in a new cap/rotor and coil, compression test.... and no matter what we tried, the idle is very rough with a consistent stumble at all RPM, and my #3 cylinder gets zero (0) spark at idle.

On my thread about this issue, someone rang in that they had the identical issue and trouble shoot, only to then pull the Pertronix and put in points. Magically he had energy at the #3 plug again.. ??

So I figure fk it, ignition was tops on my gift idea email list to my wife anywho...

If your getting into the $300 dollar range, I would definitely consider the O2Again pulley and Megajolt.

Mike, I was thinking the saaaaame thing, being that I have a complete 318i top end in boxes for later use... But I am even more clueless on that topic.

We need a gooder, or at least a more accessible build sheet on a basic EDIS system install and parts list..

Here's a first pass at the Megajolt / O2Again crank-fired ignition costs and setup:

Vendor - Item - Cost

Autosport Labs - Megajolt - $161.95

Boost Engineering - EDIS Module (4-cylinder) - $37

Boost Engineering - EDIS Coil (4-cylinder) - $22

Boost Engineering - EDIS Crank Sensor - $20

O2Again - EDIS / 2002 M10 Crank Pulley / Sensor Mount - $179

Wow, never looked into megajolt before. I'd love to still be able to run carbs but have programmable timing.

Oh and Jason don't forget the R1 carbs have the TPS built in, so it would work great together.

Mine si coming with the crane 700 installed. I spoke to Jeff in depth about this stuff. He told me that for street use the 700 is about perfect, 3000 is just overkill for a street motor. The 700 has leds to show which cylinders are firing etc. I talked with him about the EDIS etc. The EDIS is probably more expensive and time consumng to get setup and running vs a rebuilt distributor. For the street motor I will most liklely never realize if I had EDIS or a Distributor with Crane. I don't run High compressions (I am at 9.5) I am putting my bucks right now towards getting a really good running EFI going. Once I have that running then I may consider going EDIS and use the rebuilt distributor as a cam position sensor. And thats only if I think I will notice any real gain over a very precision rebuilt distributor

I'm not as dumb as I look

The dizzy I have is immaculate. Came in the trunk of that last Tii parts car. Looks to be a rebuilt or a NOS replacement. Even the O ring has that dusty looking release compound on it still, like new windshield seals have.

Should be good and accurate.

So.

A good man offered me a good price on a presumed good MSD 6AL unit and a coil. I am undecided, after nosing around, as to whether I will need a 1. ballast resistor (being that I have a resistor wire), and 2. Will I need a Tach adaptor..?

Nah, you won't need no stinkin' Tach adapter. If the MSD is being triggered off of a pertronix or allison, then just stick the Tach wire where it would have gone on the coil, but just in parallel with the MSD setup (Do NOT hook it up to the coil. That would be BAADDDD!!)

Oh, Yea, that MSD AL makes about a 2 inch spark on cranking!!! :D

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
