320i alternator from 1981 model- fits?

I am pretty sure my alternator is going bad. The car runs outstandingly well, but three times now it has intermittently (very very rarely) sputtered and missed... it just cuts out, then comes right back to life if I step on the gas a bit.

It's now doing this constantly when the lights are on, and last time, the voltage light lit up as well. Battery is new and so are the battery cables (1 year or so)

Seeing as my alternator is original, I'm going to swap it out. I have a 320i unit on a shelf in my garage, but it was from a 1981 or 1982 320i- the kind where the alternator is mounted below the engine.

I read somewhere before (but can't find it now) that the post-1979 e21 alternator can be used, but requires using the bracket from the 320i? I have the bracket but I wanted to make sure this was possible before I tried to do it.
