where to buy hardware

Recommended Posts

Just be careful at the hardware store. Make sure you get the right grade, length, and thread. Many stores still have good stuff but a lot of stores these days have cheap Chinese junk.

Also note that in some cases you also need to have fasteners that do not have threads all the way along the shank.

A long time ago I bought a large assortment kit of Grade 8 AN fasteners (bolts, nuts, washers, nylocs, etc.). I have supplemented it with other sizes that my cars like. It was not cheap but I grin every time I need a new bolt and I can walk over to the bin and pick up the exact right part, all shiny and new.

Most Fastenal stores I work with will only sell a full box of bolts.

While Fastenal is a good place to get bolts and stuff, it seams like it really depends on who you get at the counter and what you "present" (hint,hint..) to them at the counter. I used to have to buy a whole box of hardware when I only needed a few, but lately they have been selling me just what I need (see below).

Here's what I have noticed,

If the package is opened (hint,hint..) when you take the box of fasteners up to the counter (hint,hint..), they "assume" that items have been sold out of the box and it is no longer a full box and they will sell you less than the full box.

If you catch my drift...

I recently tried to find some M5 nuts at the hardware store.

Don't bother going to Home Depot! They stopped carrying metric hardware even though they have way too much SAE stuff in the hardware aisle.

Lowe's has a pretty good selection of small metric hardware if you only need a few items.

McMaster-Carr is hit-or-miss as far as pricing. I buy things regularly from them at my job.

Wurth brand fasteners are really nice if you can find/afford them.

I purchased lots of "kits" from Totally Stainless for my VW years ago. http://www.totallystainless.com/.
