Here's a good place to start:

Long story short, if I were you I'd be looking for a car with a straight body, good mechanicals and perhaps a less that good interior. $4k will get you a nice car, but you're probably going to have to sacrifice one of the three... body isn't an option (you don't want a rust-bucket) and if you're using it as a daily, you want an engine and mechanicals that have been attended to, which really only leave the interior... you can get a nice carpet kit from esty for $200 or so and if you keep your eyes peeled, you should also be able to get a decent set of seats for another few hundred.

My $.02.

You're in luck. Lots of owners up here, and a great local mechanic if things get serious (or even to help you shop). There are always cars up on Craigslist, and I think you can find a good one. My advice would be to look at more than one so you can compare one against another. I'm not sure I'd have bought the one I did if I'd comparison-shopped, but overall it's a good little car. Welcome to the sickness!
