E30 Touring NM/NA In Canada

Recommended Posts

DOT rules are that any car that's over 25 years old is exempt from DOT federalization. Since this E30 is only 20 years old, I wouldn't buy it but I would love to have it. In some states, (CA for example), if you import a gray market car, you have to deal with smog testing. CA will require you to obtain a certificate of conformance from an independent lab. If you live in CA, don't import a gray market car that is a 76 or newer into the state unless you like dealing with the CA Air Resources Board and have real deep pockets, AMHIK. Here's my horror story of trying to register a gray market 81 528i that I bought out of state and brought back to CA.

I'm just real lucky the smog referee found my car in the data base.
