MSD ignition installation

I have put a MSD 6A ignition module in my 74 1602 with a 2002 motor. The engine runs great, and starts fast. I had to dump the metal core wires for standard wires and I used bosh platinum plus plugs gaped at .025 The problem I have run into is the Tach wont work now. I hooked it up to the MSD tack port. I have a tach/dell meter that works fine on the msd tach connection but the stock tach will not work. Has anyone else installed a similar ignition setup and has the tach working? any advice in getting the BMW tach to work with the new ignition?

This is one more reason for anyone else to consider the MSD 5/CDI 5520 unit made by MSD. $35 less, smaller, and no tach adapter required. Only difference is 15 mJ on the output, which is usable at 400 HP. It's definitely the way to go.

The 6A is better, but the difference appears to be over-kill...

I don't recall installing a diode...

I had the 6a already. I removed from my intl 4X4 truck project (I bought the truck with it already on it). I figure the car would better benefit from it then the truck, so I used it. If was purchasing one specifically I would have gotten a smaller, cheaper unit for easier mounting if for nothing else.

im running MSD 6a-Blaster coil-Pertronix with out a tach adapter on a 76 2002. i have the black tachometer wire from the insturment pack connected to the Pertronix Black wire & MSD 6a white wire so 3 wires all connected together. for some reason your problem seems more prevalent on early model 02s judging by the amount of complaints that iv seen on the FAQ MSD 6a complaints. if you go to MSD web site they break it down pretty good as to when and why you need a tach adapter. just be pateint and read and follow the instructions you cant go wrong.

I PUT MSD 6a UNITS ON TWO 2002s .

I USED THE EXTRA SPADE PLUG ON THE END OF THE BOX TO RUN THE

TACH WITH NO PROBLEMS .

I AM ALSO DOING THE SAME ON THE BENZOLET WITH THE CHEVY 350

IN IT AND THE TACH WORKS FINE .

I HAD TO REPLACE THE DIESEL TACH MOVEMENT IN THAT ONE WITH A VDO

AFTERMARKET UNIT BUT IT WORKS THE SAME WAY THE 2002 TACH DOES .
