Carroll Shelby

Recommended Posts

I was watching a show about Carroll Shelby the other night on PBS (or some PBS-type network). Anyhow, he was talking about when he went to Chrysler and helped build the Omni GLHS and those types of cars. He said (and I'm paraphrasing):"The only hot rod in the '70's was a little 90 horsepower BMW, so I knew we could do something with the Chrysler 4 cylinders."

Something like that. I could only imagine it was the 2002 and I've been looking for the quote but I can't find it.....

Oh boy the "buy a car get a check" Lee Iacocca days of Chrysler.

What a great leader, gets a bailout from the government and pays it back. Saved Chrysler, The Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and countless UAW jobs. Wisely turned down a shot at the oval office.

Iacocca was a huge fan of Shelby during his Ford tenure. Rightfully so, he won everything in site with his cobras and the GT40 program. Somebody had to shine up the minivan and "K cars" image so he hired his old friend Shelby to give the Dodge Omni some much needed stripes, wide tires, an HP boost, and some prestige.

I had a black Omni GLHS (Goes Like Hell, Squared) - got it new, sold it a few years after I got my '02. Lots of torque steer - my 1st/last FWD - but man, it was wicked quick and had lotsa grins-per-mile.

When new, it was one of the fastest 4-doors in America. I had tons of fun street racing that sleeper - most folks didn't know what it was, and were shocked to find out ;-). It was actually a great auto-X car too - hard to class - but I could regularly beat/embarrass many more-deserving 'sports cars' with that 'ol econobox. Carroll used the old adage - big motor/small car, and power-to-weight-ratios to great advantage in that one.
