"L" dash light came on today

I was driving, the '74tii, today and the "L" dash light came on and stayed on. I pulled over but everything seemed to be fine. The owners manual only indicates "battery charge". I was not far from my destination so I continued. I hope I did no damage. What are the implications of this? I can only guess that the batter is not being charged and the alternator is bad. But I'm only guessing.

What could the reasons be for the to come on and stay on?

I hope it's simple.

In the order I'd check, from easy/cheap to more difficult/expensive:

1. Heavy brown ground wire that runs from the alternator to the engine block...it can look good and be broken right at the terminal. No ground=no charge from the alternator. Easy fix: replace wire.

2. As was pointed out--loose plug on the back of the alternator. It's supposed to be held in place with a wire bail or clip, but the clip is often among the missing.

3. Loose wires at the voltage regulator. Another plug; make sure it's tight and clean. Also check ground wire here.

4. Voltage regulator has gone south.

5. Alternator has gone south.

This all presupposes the alternator belt is nice and tight, and not slipping.

Happy troubleshooting
