You definitely do not need to switch to R134, and, in fact, I'd recommend against it. It does not cool as well as R12, and our A/C systems are marginal anyway.

I'd recommend you look in to replacing your compressor with a Sanden rotary unit. We run them in both our ' 02s, and they do an excellent job, and have the added advantage of being a little lighter than the OE units.

I heard tell of a box being rebuilt for 450 here. No removal or install included. The fans are close to 200 new.

What year of car are we talking here? I have a rebuildable box with working fan available for the early (3 slider/selector) variety. Rebuild and swap it in. Less down time. Shoot me an email if you are interested.
