E10 2002 with S14 Conversion | M2 Project?

I am with Blunt, especially if you plan to farm out the work anyway.

Doing your own project does not necessarily lead to a cheaper route. What you do get is the pleasure of working on your own car, knowing every little screw, bolt, wire, connection etc on the car and the satisfaction of driving the car after you're done.

When I started thinking about my project, I considered the S14 option, then I thought about an M42 with a supercharger but ended up with an M20 with minor mods. You still get your 190 hp (approx) but the M20 is A LOT cheaper. You can still run your turbo flares, big brakes, coil-overs or whatever else you like.

You can build a pretty significant 2.7i motor (220 hp) for about 5K. A stock S14 will cost you over 10K. (190 hp)

Don't get me wrong. A motorsport BMW engine is a unique item. The feel and the sound are special. But the performance? You can do better for a lot less.

If you want a nice s14 and this car is as advertised, you should try to talk the seller down on the price. It will cost you much more to get a car of similar quality and then do the conversion. Send me an email when you get back and I would be happy to take you for a ride.

For those that own an M2 now, with 20/20 hindsight...any regrets? Anything you would have done differently?

Wouldn't have started with a Touring shell - not enough rigidity without a full cage. I'm still in 2 minds whether coilovers are right for a street car and will decide after a different set of spring rates. A proven road set-up like eibach/h&r/ireland would have been a lot easier. Other than that no regrets - love the car, but as it's been said it's a buzzy motor and not the most relaxed or refined mode of transport, it's a hooligan!

Buy someones completed car and tweak it. save a bunch of dough

+1, Best advice so far. I'm thinking of doing another s14 in my Granada. The only thing different I would do this time is have the motor rebuilt first. No regrets on the first one, great fun. I actually owned an e30 M3 and loved taking turns driving them. On the Turbo, drive one first....you might not really like it.

I owned a turbo and an M2 at the same time. I drove the pee outta the M2 and the turbo sat safely in the garage 99% of the time. Wreck an M2 get a shell, wreck a turbo and... I drive about 45 avg speed since moving and my M42 powered 02 is all I need anymore. M2 is cheaper, faster, quicker than a factory turbo. Hell, I bought the same one twice.

Thanks for the feedback from this great 2002 community. The M2 definitely qualifies as more of a daily driver type vehicle. However, with that said, if I did end up taking stewardship of a 2002 Turbo, it would be driven quite frequently as well. I understand the economics involved with putting mileage on exotic/vintage type vehicles and the inverse relationship between mileage and resale value.

Perhaps the solution in the short term is to purchase a standard 2002 driver...get a feel for this vehicle, while searching for a M2 or Turbo. With seat time, I will either love it or discover that ultimately its not really for me or simply that it needs more power :).

That's my car. I have a few local people interested, but nothing solid yet. I'm probably going to address some of the BaT readers' concerns and re-list it. I have a little flexibility in the price, but it will still be firmly in the $20Ks and since I have a shop here, it makes more sense for me to clean up a few things to get the right money then sell it cheap if it's not perfect.

When are you in NYC next? I'd be happy to show you the car and take you for a spin so you can see what an M2 is like firsthand. I like the setup so much that I bought a 2nd one! (which is why I'm selling this one) While there are other ways to make more power and cheaper routes to go, I think the S14 in a 2002 tells a great story and is true to the history of the car.

I just got back from running an errand in my M2 and after not driving it for a few weeks I sometimes forget how fun they are. I have faster cars but the sound and feel of it at 7k never ceases to put a smile on my face. Theres nothing like it really

What a waste of a tii.

If the condition is anything like the 72 tii I bought from Zac Moseley a while back it's worth 10k or less. If you are interested in it, take tools and a jack. Be sure to inspect undercarriage thoroughly and under the trim. I found some rusty cracking bodywork cleverly hidden behind the grills of the 72 as well as some very shoddy welding to the seat supports and park brake mount.

I came across these comments when I was searching for information on the S14 conversion. You need to be careful when buying a car that it is not original. I should have known better. I fell for the description that Zak Moseley listed on the forums, and BAT postings, I then purchased the car mentioned here from Zak. Of course I can’t blame him for everything that went wrong, but I soon realized that I was going to have problems when I broke down twice on the way home. He listed a large amount of pictures and video of the car, but I guess that one needs to see these in person before writing the check. Problems that I encountered were related to the electrical system and poor installation of parts combined with bad wiring. In any event, I then decided to fix the car enough to make it run well and try to sell it, after checking the car and fixing what he stated to be in good working order soon learned not to trust this guy. Prior to putting up the car for sale, I decided to let my mechanic which owns Perfect Power, a Porsche race shop specialist in Illinois and let him go over the car . $6,000 later in engine, transmission , suspension, drive shaft, oil cooler, seals, valves, engine mounts, exhaust, electrical, oil separator, differential, on and on… I am now so happy with the way the car drives, I decide to keep it. At this time the car is not a collector quality specimen, but a real nice driver. The engine is smooth, strong and the car is a blast to drive. I still have to do a number of things to make the car the way I like it, but for now , I will enjoy the summer.

If anyone is interested in doing the S14 swap, I for one have to say that if done correctly, it is way cool. I owned E-39 M5 and a 2004 M3, I thought that these cars were awesome, but pound per pound this little Tii M2 is a blast.

Mariom2, sorry to hear about your bad experience. I know all to well about how this guy operates.

The car I got from him had multiple problems he did not disclose.

 

I sued and  won!

 

Probably every car he sells has problems, why else would he sell them?
