I have finally got the ti to my house, where it now rests with the rest of the "fleet". It was a long haul from Toronto to Atlanta down I-75!

A few things to address before you'll see me out on the streets in it:

1. ignition wiring needs to be redone. the original wire has a break in it somewhere. this will require unwrapping everything and checking all the wiring from battery to key. I know there were mice in the inner fenders, so everything needs to be checked for "nibbling".

2. sync and tune the carbs. the car runs, but not really well yet. it stumbles on acceleration, and spits out the intakes. these are not the original solex carbs to this ti, although i do still have the factory original solex 40s in a box. I’ll need to check the jetting and then tune these in. i anticipate a long process!

3. refit the front bumper. i had this off to run a pile of extra light, but the lights have moved over to my '70, and the ti never really ran these. the bumper looks right on this car.

Some other items to address:

1. carpet – the carpet is shot and needs to be replaced. I’ll be ordering a set from Esty in due course (once I decide on the color…)

2. seats – the seats have a cloth insert, which is DEAD now. Also, they are blue and this ti had a black interior when new. I think it would look really sharp with a tan interior. Does anybody have pictures of a Granda red roundie with a tan interior?

3. guibo and driveshaft center bearing – these should be replaced just because.

Eventually, I’ll have to get it to the paint shop, there is some bubbling and blistering which will need to be addressed. This is pretty major work though, and having just got the car here I’m not ready to make that jump just yet. I’m not going to go half way with this car, I have too much of a personal attachment to it.

Attached are some pictures of the current state.

Jon

excellent NEW car !! mit SOLEX mixingasenpfhartin too!

first glance from Connecticut - me thinks you have lug nuts

digging into the steel rim hole seats - remove and inspect for poor

contact between the nut taper and the wheels hole taper - please

possible wrong taper nuts for the rim?

1.) - remove the screw holding the fuse box , lift up the box,

and remove MOUSE nest waiting for you in there

(DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE ANY WORK ON THE CAR!!)

2.) BEFORE you throw any SOLEX's out with the bath water and baby -

COMPRESSION TEST, AND COLD VALVE ADJUSTMENTS

do not to any jetting changing untill valves are set correctly,

ignition dwell & timing set correctly - THEN approach any jetting change-

might just be dirt blocking jets presenty?

and the wiring is a mess - you'll sort that out we're sure

It's great that you have it in GA now, Jon! Hopefully I'll get a chance to check it out in person next time I'm in the area.

Please keep us posted on your progress with it. I know the car has a special meaning for you, so I'm sure it will be a labor of love to get it done.

yes, i did remove most of the mouse nest already from under the fuse box. lots of paper towel was used by the busy mice. need a long neck vacuum to complete the job. also inside the hood at the front. needs a full review.

lug nuts - likely these were for the BWA rims. I have a set of steel lugs i can swap on.

the carbs - it was running great on the 40 DCOE webers, plug burn was even, and i burned up only a bit of oil. valves likely could use some adjustment, but it will be slight changed, if at all.

A bit of history:

sold new in Toronto at Northwest Motors. This car replaced a 1970 2002ti bought new by my dad. the '70ti was totalled in 1972, and this car had just been swapped back in to the dealership (by a University Prof from McMaster University in Hamilton, ON for a CSL...) this was my dad's daily driver from 1972 through 1984 when a Bavaria replaced it. I cam home from the hospital in this very car in 1974. it went onto occasional use until 1988, when it was parked. i restarted it again in 2001, and ran it during the summers through 2005 when i moved to GA.

I have some decent parts to add to it, including the dash from the 70ti, which is free from cracks!

a labor of love, to be sure.

I am happy (and very jealous) that you have this ti AND you pulled it back from Toronto to GA.

I've been trying to vacuum some nuts from the inside of my front hood areas for a while. Funny how you open the hood sometimes and something rolls forward inside the hood. Let me know if you can get in there.

Please start your own blog on this wonderful car.

right down to the battery and the fuel filter. that is pretty funny.

regarding jets - the carbs I just added were in fact jetted for a 1600ti, not a 2002ti. I swapped over all the bits from the original solex carbs so everything should be the correct size now (in this case size does matter). the butterfly shafts on the originals are still siezed, otherwise i could sell somebody a nice set of solexes jetted for their 1600! I think i'll hold on to them for now though.

Still have to re-wire the ignition wires, but I'm hopefull (so very hopefull...) that this will solve my initial lean condition and acceleration stumble.

Tony, it would be truly awesome if you were able to make it to V@V in 2011. so sorry i wasn't able to meet up with you, Kris, John, Dave and Richard while i was up. things just got way too busy. I know I'll be back from time to time, likely with an 02 here or there.

Zac - an 02 meet might go over well in September once the cursed heat breaks a bit.

Harry - when will you be back in ATL?

regards,

Jon

Very neat story, good luck with the project. The Northwest Motors link was near and dear to my heart as i worked at Northwest for about 5 years, and still know the original owners quite well.

As far as your colour combo, I dont think tan wasa available at the time, only tobacco (possibly). To have a tan interior, you'd have to go to a later square tail light car interior, or spend a serious chunk of $$ having the interior custom recreated by an upholstery shop.

I agree with Jim, would love to see an ongoing blog on this car.

Good luck with it!

Jon, I'm expecting to go to ATL in the next couple of months. Might have to take a drive to Jacksonville to send the Baur down here and also have to figure out what to do with the touring.

Hope to meet up with you then and see the car.

Congratulations Jon! Is that the silver car I sold you back in the day? Hey, you finally brought the ti home and I finally bought a home to bring my ti to! Looking forward to the project blog.

Best Regards,

"Z"

Hey Z,

you can just see the "silver" car, but mostly the parts you can see are purple now. the "silver" car you can see looking from the garage out is an '82 320i I've picked up along the way.

How is your ti doing? I believe yours was also Granda, correct? In fact, the ONLY ti i've seen in person recently which was not Granda is Vince's green one.

Peirre (x2, both were Granada...), Tony, you and me. There was one in Toronto that got scrapped by Johm M, it wasn't Granada, but I never saw it.

Good to hear from you,

Jon
