Two small electric puller fans?

Lebowski

Recommended Posts

I can't use a pusher fan since I have my intercooler and oil cooler wedged up front... has anyone used two smaller fans mounted to the sides? I know a puller fan won't fit given the length the water pump sticks out. Spal makes a hi performance 9" and a 7.5" that would give a total of about 1180cfm. I don't have problems at speed, but around town in 90+ degree weather I have enough obstruction to airflow with the IC and OC upfront that I am getting hotter than I'd like...

EDIT: I'm using a Curt Ingraham wide radiator so I have a couple of extra inches in the driver's side to work with...

I hope someone can figure out a solution, Lebowski. I'm struggling with the same issue/problem/dilemma. See question 3 of my thread.

I've been speaking to BLUNT and Bill Williams about this. You can email me offline if you come up with anything or want to collaborate. davidbowen5828 at comcast dot net.

I have seen small fans used, but it was tight, so it can be done. If you have the room give it a try. You could always try a electric water pump, but that is too much fabrication, it has been done here, check the blogs.

IF you have AC you should have at least one fan dedicated to come on when the Ac comes on or at least come on at stop signs.(Otis)

Otis, I'm going to brainstorm this with my friend and local 02 guru to see what is possible. I know this must really be bugging you since you left my "extra two inch" comment in my first post dangling...

I haven't pulled my fan off yet, but anyone know how much clearance we are talking about? I'm wondering because I want to know if there is enough room to place the fan offset in front of the water pump with the motor of the fan sitting just lateral to the water pump shaft...

Hi lebowski - any updates on your progress on this?

I have a very similar issue with my mechanical fan blade brushing up against my radiator - and as a result had to trim it shorter. Unfortunately, this is causing me to run a bit warm (about 3/4 in stop and go traffic)

I had been giving the suggestion of installing two puller fans on either side of the water pump shaft - and so i'd love to hear if you've had any success with this? Please post a few pics if you can.

Thanks,

Emmet

Sorry emmet but I don't have an easy solution...

I'm awaiting an engine rebuild that will use a belt driven water pump mounted where the a/c condenser sits. Hopefully then I can use a puller fan like the sidewinder fan the "fan man" sells.

I'll have to let you know in the next few months.

Even with the water pump deleted there are clearance issues with the other pulleys so who knows...

If you come up with a 2 fan solution I would love to see it too.

Best of luck!

why not use 4 small fans from a motorbike rad - then there would be a space in the middle to clear the water pump. Four of these 7" fans would probably do the job nicely. A bit complex for my liking, but it would work, and provide plenty of redundancy for a fan failure!

Hi john,

Unfortunately, my stock fan has had to be trimmed down quite a bit due to some suspected minor front end damage at one point in time.  As a result the radiator position has been pushed inwards abit and on an angle.  From what i've been told, to rectify this issue would be quite involved and costly.   So long story short, i am unable to use a standard fan blade.

I've changed the entire cooling system and in traffic, its still getting a bit too hot for my liking - which currently sits at about 3/4 or slightly higher.

So this is why i am looking for alternate solutions...but seems there arent a lot of options.

I already have a Pusher fan in front of my AC condenser in the nose, but dont feel this is adequate either.  Hong Kong gets pretty hot and if i get stuck in traffic, im pretty much screwed!

I just need to find out how to get a puller fan (or two or four) between the rad and the engine.

I've received comments from some who are currently working on this, just hoping to hear from someone who has successfully managed to do this...anyone?

Thanks,

Emmet
