Cheap and Better Sunroof Cables! Volvo 240

Based on some comments made by Rogerspeed on a sunroof cable thread last year, I went hunting at the pick n pull for a manual sunroof'd Volvo 240. I pulled apart a 1985 240 DL and got both cables. Here are the two pax side cables side by side (my drivers side was broken, hence the trip):

As you can see, the ends are identical, except that they are solid metal. No plastic to crack! They fit perfectly in the 2002's sunroof system. The only difference is that the Volvo cables are about 2" shorter than the BMW ones:

However after installing, I didn't notice this to be a problem at all. The cables still have a good 3" of extension past the winding gear.

The best part? It only cost me $9 and 10min of my time. Given the metal construction of these, I don't plan on having to ever do this again!

huh- I have a set of those, and I remember them being longer. Go figure.

Lots of the sunroof parts are the same or similar-

same manufacturer (Golde?)

Good spot.

I looked online at the standard sources (autohausaz, fcpgroton) and couldn't find any listing. Perhaps the dealer carries them?

I thought it was really easy. there are a number of tutorials on here and my2002tii.com The sunroof panel is basically held on by 4 bolts/screws on each side. After that it's a matter of about 16 or so phillips screws holding the track/covers in place. Remove all of them and the cables pull right out. It probably took me 10min @ the yard to pull them (after already pulling mine out of the 02, so I knew how the mechanism worked)

For anyone's info... I went in search of a Volvo at the pull-a-part here and came up empty. I did however find a mid-80's Jetta. I took the cables from that and they are the same thing, all metal, a bit short with no noticeable difference in functionality. Just for the hell of it I pulled the cover off of an early 80's Audi and they were totally different even though the mech was by Golde. Go figure...

I looked and came up empty, might be because they never break.

  • 2 months later...

I've searched this forum for a sunroof panel removal tutorial and nothing. I also looked at the my2002tii.com and it show me how to remove the sun roof. MY sun roof has leaked in before so my father sealed it with corking and today I decided to see what was wrong with it. So i cut the seal around the panel and turned the sun roof crank inside the car and it did open untill i had to use my hands to pull it back to open. Now the damn thing wont close all the way. I really need help. Thanks!
