engine surging power loss

Recommended Posts

Hi there, I need some help. I'm up at a friends house and my 76 02 is running rough. It seems to me that a screw is missing from the choke (I think) and I don't know if the butterfly is supposed to stay open. The butterfly in the pic is stuck open, can't move it with finger. Do you know what size screw is needed. I have tried to attach a pic, any help would be much appreciated.

you poor sod - still got all that air leaking ,

engine gagging, emission control krap stuck all over yer motor.....

it's a good thing that the choke is broken OPEN

it's when it's broken SHUT that you would have a running problem

but yer motor might be unhappy because it injested

some sort of metal screw clip thingy which is either wedged

in a valve seat, gouging up a cylinder wall, planted hard

into a piston top .................? Say 3 Hail Mary's

don't know what else to tell you long distance?

idle mixture screw reacting to in or out turning ?

all the plug wires stuck on?

nice fuel pump - how gas is in the tank?

got good fuel flow up to the pump ? - and/or

good output out of the pump?

.....??????????????

Oops fat fingers put 72 02 its actually a 76 (edited the original to show correct year). I'll try to describe what the car is doing. I was driving along at 70 mph and the engine started to surge or chug (best way I can describe it) and lose power. I pulled over and noticed the fuel filter was dirty so I put a new one in and the car seemed to run better but that was very short lived. It seems that it will run better after it sits and idles for a couple of minutes but shortly after driving it starts surging again. I also noticed the upper butterfly is stuck in the open position, I would imagine it should be able to move open and closed, could this attribute to the problem?

In my original post I mentioned that a screw was missing from the choke. I don't think I described it correctly. The screw was missing from the part in the lower right had section of the picture (part with Solex stamped on it) that attaches it to the carb.

Any other advice would be great. I'm trying to see if I can fix the problem without taking to the shop. Maybe I just need to get a new carb??

thanks, Ryan

clearly a fuel - dirty jets problemeven with a filter - fine silt, water,

sitting for long periods - that stuff will pass the filter and your jets are

coated with fuel flow blocking crud. Dissassemble the carb time.

don't toss the SOLEX into the neighbors just yet!

needs ' overhaul ' cleaning, new gasket, seals . . . .

and yes the missing screw will cause an air leak to your secondary

diaphram (round thing SOLEX) - not effect idle but duriing engine

pulling on acceleration

Thanks for the help. Is there supposed to be a gasket between the secondary diaphragm and the carburetor? I was able to re secure with two screws but it didn't solve the problem. I will try to clean overhaul the carb and see how that works.

Thanks c.d. for your help. I took it out this morning after sitting in garage all night and it runs just fine for the first couple of minutes but when I was in third gear at about 50 mph it started chugging again. Did the same thing a couple of more times and then would idle poorly and would stall at idle. I will clean the carb and see what gunk is in there. Are there any in line fuel filter that are better then the rest?
