No horn relay?

My early '69 does not have a relay, or any wires near where the relay is supposed to be so I'm guessing it didn't come with one? I can't find a wiring diagram that shows where the + side of the horns would come from. Any ideas?

So the horn is supplied with switched positive. Get your multimeter out (or a test light). One wire is going to be hot and one will be floating.

Since you have switched 12V, hooking up a relay is a snap. If it were me, I'd pull both wires from the horn, hook one to permanent ground and wire the other to the NO pole on the relay. Take the switched 12V and wire to the other side of the NO connection and one wire across the relay coil.

Take the wire that leads to the horn button and hook it to the other side of the relay coil.

My personal favorite is the Harbor Freight Italian air horn knock-off. No one is going to ignore you anymore :-)

brake fluid reservoir and the voltage regulator is the horn relay on your '69; it is on my Feb '69 production car. Have someone press the horn button while you lay a finger on the relay. You should feel it click.

I don't think those can-style relays are available any more, but unless you're a purist, any Bosch/Hella relay with the requisite number of terminals will work. Also Volvo used those round can-style relays and may still be available from Volvo, or from a junkyard.

The silver can is the horn relay, all 2002s have a horn relay. 1600s did not have the relay because they only had one horn, not two. The bigger concern is that there are no relays or fuses for your headlights on the early cars.

On six fuse cars, neither high or low beams are either fused or have relays.

On twelve fuse roundies, the low beams are individually fused (3&4), the high beams have no fuses and niether have relays.

On squarelights, low beams are individually fused (9&10), the high beams have a single fuse (11) and at least the highs have a relay.

I did a column years ago about adding a fused relay for the high beams to 12 fuse roundies; you can make the same modificaiton for six fuse cars... with two fused relays.
