I have started building my new motor, block etc goes to machine shop this next week. I am buying oil pans, timing covers etc from FAQ members. I will be swapping the motors in a few weeks and installing my 5 speed at the same time.

As I get these parts I need to buy bolts. Is there a place I can go online to find out what size say th eoil pans bolts are, timing cover bolts etc. That way I can go pick up nice cad plated stuff and get the short block fully assemled before I drop it in.

The old motor runs and is staying in the car while I build this short block

I'm not as dumb as I look

check realoem or MT (bimmer.com). They should list all the necessary hardware, but they will add up. You are better off removing existing bolts from your current engine and send them to a zinc plater, cheaper this way. Another option is to buy assorted metric bright zinc plated bolts from, say Autozone (cheap), and dip them in a yellow de-chromate solution yourself, available from caswell plating online (http://www.caswellplating.com/)

There is a place here in Dallas called Metric and Multistandard. I can get bolts very very cheap. And good quality bolts. I have bought quite a bit from them in the past.

I will check realoem etc and see what I can dig up

Nick,

Elliots hardware and Turner Hardware in Carrollton are great resources for harware. Great metric selections. I was just there to get some m12x1.5 diff and control arm bolts. Black oxide, tho, not cad plated.

I've tried ordering all new bolts from BMW, but it's kind of a crap shoot if you get the exact replacement bolt, or a slightly different or superceded bolt/nut/washer. YMMV.
