weber 38/38 installation question

hello,

after 2 weeks of studying and a several hours in the california sun, my sophomoric confidence has been defeated decidedly by my realist demons...

i nearly added "replaced a very old 32/36 weber carburetor with a glisteningly new 38 dgas" to my constantly swelling list of life experiences, but alas- i'm not sure what to do with this 2nd bronzish hose pipe on the top here. i'm 97.12% sure that the lower one is the fuel inlet as it terminates at a screen above the "strainer inspection plug." but this one looks a little different from the photos on the internets. however, such sleuthing has led me to a significant suspicion- that this mysterious golden phallus is a "vapor vent" and could possibly be where one could totally like, hook up a carbon filtering device unit!

Anyone know for sure? is it a vital juncture in some critical sweet vehicular operation circuit or is it safe to run the car with nothing clamped down on the little guy?

many thanks in advance!

by the way, this here forum now occupies most of my quality random internet browsing time at work!

Different can be good . . . it's a viewpoint.

It appears your carb may be a manual choke 38/38 unit with dual accelerator pumps. My guess is that second fitting runs parallel to the other, and perhaps was intended to be used as a flow-through return line(?). You could carefully remove the 6 top plate cover screws to verify.

After that, the tuning begins - curious to know how the dual accelerator pump units are metered as compared to the single.

hmmm, i've been having similar thoughts, although i haven't seen a whole lot of 38's in the first place. its different from the exploded diagram even, this horizontal brass fitting sure isn't depicted in the documentation. if you tilt the carburetor into the sunlight and gaze down this fitting, the interior terminates at a tiny hole.

i bought it from john moulton at jam engineering- he was enormously helpful on the phone, so i'm hoping he'll have some insight tomorrow, if i can't resolve the mystery today...

right on man! you've got good eyes- it is the manual choke unit and taking a closer look- i think it does have 2 accelerator pumps! you can see the 2nd one in the photo, the thing with the piece of tubing on the lower right. its missing from the photo posted so kindly by homeboy in maine- see? your photo is a helpful piece to the puzzle!

anyhow, i came across this: http://www.3geez.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64888

very interesting- kbmb02, do you have any ideas about what to do with the 2nd fitting? just cap it? am i going to have to revise my fantasy about the futuristic charcoal filter?

thanks a lot you(s) guys!
