Speedo cable hold down bolt dilemma

Pierre

Recommended Posts

I searched and did not get anywhere.

I am missing the special bolt that hold the speedo cable in the transmission. A regular 6mm bolt is too fat to go through the slot in the sleeve.

Real OEM does not show a part number. The dealer could not find the part either. The parts guy was stumped but could not help me.

This is for a stock 4-speed.

Do I just machine the threads out of a bolt to make it fit? I got one out of a big six 5-speed (I think it's a 265??) but it's a different size.

Ideas? Blunt?

Yup-

you can grind down the tip

of a 6mm bolt.

Safety wiring it is good.

But take Sherman up on his offer if you can.

Pierre -

If Sherman doesn't have an extra, I might. I will look tomorrow.

If I can't find it - I got mine from Dave Varco. E-mail him, he may be able to set you up. It has no part #, and is hard to come by - so I don't know if you can get it from Steve.

Let me know if Sherman doesn't come through.

well - what do you know - I think you guys are right.

I stand corrected.

Ken - don't feel bad. MT part numbers are all over the place (as they say, I'm sure there is a "method to the madness". It keeps us on our toes.

Speedometer cables and fuel tank sending units are in the instruments section

Speedometer cable drive parts are in the individual transmission parts section

Transmission output shaft lockplate is in the transmission gears section

I'm sure the BMW parts folks had a hard time grouping things so everyone could find the spare parts.

While it does seem that the picture on the Maximillian site shows the proper part, that's a plain bolt, 6mm thread 15 mm long.

It does not work.

That bolt fits at first, but then, when the tip of the bold reaches the cable, it is too thick to fit through. You can force the threads through but they are actually digging into the metal of the cable end.

The correct bolt is actually a pin and a threaded section. The threaded section starts at the bolt head for 5 or 6 threads, then the rest of the pin is a narrower smooth shaft that fits in the slot of the speedo cable.

Thanks for all the input and offers. I ended up grinding part of a bolt down and made it work, at least for now. I needed to move the car, and without the bolt and the cable, the transmission dumps its oil out of the speedo drive hole.

I would still like to get the proper part. Did someone find one in their pile?

Thanks.

Pierre

Looking for the same fixing bolt. I recognize that this is an old thread but thought I’d begin my search here. Does anyone still have one?

Not sure if you’ve had a chance to check, but they also seem common to a range of BMW bikes … R60, R90, etc. look like a buck or so each. And listed at a range of bike parts places online.

It’s funny that you mention that as I discovered the same thing last night as I was poking around the internet! I used the part number in this thread and this popped up:

The picture in the link confirms that it has the pin tip. Pelican seems to carry them as well so I’ll just throw it in my next order.
