Why am I scared of fuel injection

ms evolved on the wrong way imho. it has just become more and more complicated day after day. and i am banned from MS group because i criticised few details in their designs and asked the "wrong" question...lol.....

Good point Pat. Aaron (Lentz) also did SDS in his turbo and likes the set up so far. One advantage of SDS is that it allows you to use the Bosch/VDO censors. MS uses GM style censors which requires drilling and tapping the BMW (2002tii/320/318i) threads in the water neck (called NPT??), an extra step which is unnecessary in an SDS application. SDS is also less expensive than Haltec or other hi-dollar units. By the time you complete the MS, the cost will probably be comparable to that of SDS. I am still contemplating...

i am using ford sensors on my car...dont ask me why. A proof that SDS is very flexible.

MS is time consuming. For SDS, you take it out of the box, wires it up and you are good to go.

For MS, If you count your time to understand how to set-up the programm on the computer, set-up the initial parameters so it will communicate, then decided how you build it up depending on the sensors, then debug the unit and realise you put the transistors backwards, and so on...it can take you forever. And you didnt tuned and installed it yet !!

I respect the ones that prefer and go MS route...but heck, i am electronic engineer and maybe i am biased, i have tons of reasons to prefer SDS. there is too much advantages to use SDS to not consider it, especialy since it falls in the do-it-yourself, there is too much things that can go wrong, when you dont know exactly what you do, no matter your skills. SDS takes out most of the "what the fuck is that"...

The hardware portion of EFI is basically he same no matter what ECU you pick. I chose to not fart around with a 325 throttle body because there is no magic about BMW air valves. I picked one that needs no hacking and physically fit.

The sensors with metric straight thread are available with the same characteristics as those with NPT (tapered pipe) threads, but why spend the money when the NPT ones are all over the place in salvage yards for a lump in your pocket.

I didn't want MS, no patience for all that soldering and debugging if it didn't work. Bought high quality equipment used at 1/2 the price of new.

I examined an SDS system also and was in the process of liquidating some excess equipment for a EFI supplier. He had one and we tried selling on EBay, no bids. So you also have to consider if you ever have the urge to change your system, you may have a struggle moving your SDE system on (I'm on my 4th ECU change, it gets in your blood). SDS is a simple system to tune.

Don't know if SDS ever got it to control a stepper motor for idle speed though. My opinion is that you will enjoy idle speed control when it's night, all lights are on and heater blower is running and your electric fan for the radiator kicks in. You will be pissed real soon when the lights go dim from loss of engine speed.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

i have old type e21 hot wire idle valve, upgraded alternator and H4 headlight, electric fuel pump and full car stereo and never had idle issues, day or night.

this is sort of marginal piss-off imho, Jim. Did you experienced that yourself ?

When it gets right down to it, you can build a MS for about 100 bucks. Then it's up to you on how well it runs. This is the intent and attraction of the original. Yes the current version is more complex than the original but it does a lot more too. Might I add that it's all open source and the tuning software is free.

MS is an incredible system once you get everything sorted. I think I spent two years planning and was able to get the EDIS portion of the ignition in the car installed in a day, then I did the fuel part in a weekend. The only issue I had was a bad part really.

Its a lot of planning and reading. Tuning isn't hard once you get things going. The car works great and I keep tweaking it and its getting better and better.

You have the be the sort of person that likes to tinker a LOT, though, imho.
