Why am I scared of fuel injection

I have my 318 manifold, fuel rails etc. the wires scare me. I have been raised on carbs. Will building a megasquirt give me improved hp and drivability over a 38/38? I know th eanswer is yes most likely. Ok, so I understand the basics of FI, throttle body, injectors squirt fuel, fuel rail delivers fuel to injectors. A computer controls when and how much the injectors squrt based on temp, 02 sensor, rpm speed etc.

So is there a good thread on converting this 318 manifold to megasquirt?

You know, what fuel rail, what t-body to use and how to mod the manifold for it?

I am in scary land and need some real advise

I'm not as dumb as I look

Step back and have a deep breath.

You aren't going to convert the manifold to megasquirt, its more.. the manifold is part of converting the car to fuel injection.

The 318i manifold, throttle body, and fuel rail really help with doing the conversion. List me off what parts you have and maybe I can help with what you need.

here is classic and pioneering MS conversion using 318i parts:

Another option is to use an aftermarket efi system like haltec or motec if you don't want to do it yourself. You will still use the 318i parts of course. They have dealer/installers across USA. It will be initially costly but also a professional job and should last a long time. Frankly, if I had the cash to burn I would go with a professional (e.g., Haltec) installation.

In the near future there will be a book available written by the guys at DIYAutotune.com. I will have them or you can get them on Amazon or DIYAutotune. Hopefully it will help clear everything. tom at 02again dot com

I felt the same way before I did my first Megasquirt conversion, which was on an MGB. I knew absolutely nothing about FI when I started.

All I can say is don't be afraid! I just finished my 02 a little over a month ago and I just filled up, in city driving was 28mpg. My previous best with the single Solex was 21.8mpg. And It has WAY more power and flexability. I can lug it or it will easily scream past 6k.

I love it!

What we don't have is a step by step MS installation tutorial specific to a 2002 . Like the ones in Keith's my2002tii site which is very informative. There are many helpful posts w/ pictures but the information is still kind of limited, at least to me. Part of it is that each fellow follows his/her own path to install an MS, some use 318i parts some 320 parts etc, different wring strategies, for example some use 320 idle air valve, some others Jeep's stepped IAC etc. Some use EDIS, some use a tii distributor, etc. I will be looking forward to get the publication from DIY Autotune when available.

Man same here. My nephew is a genious at FI. In fact he builds FI systems from the ground up for race cars, makes the harnesses etc. I am hoping maybe he can use mine as a test mule and make a kit based on the 318 manifold. A plug and play type. At least that could be an option for guys

ms evolved on the wrong way imho. it has just become more and more complicated day after day. and i am banned from MS group because i criticised few details in their designs and asked the "wrong" question...lol...

this is why i swear by SDS systems. altough very cool, you dont need 3d graphs to tune your IAC or fuel maps. Not in a 35 year old car. The engine in our cars is out dated. It likes to run rich, thats it.

I get perfect running characteristics and very good mpg with my SDS, and without having headache or bleeding nose.

Everyone has its preferences...

go on google images and type in SDS EM4F and see what are the first pictures that comes up....my car, and the ass of Ash...lol...

Good point Pat. Aaron (Lentz) also did SDS in his turbo and likes the set up so far. One advantage of SDS is that it allows you to use the Bosch/VDO censors. MS uses GM style censors which requires drilling and tapping the BMW (2002tii/320/318i) threads in the water neck (called NPT??), an extra step which is unnecessary in an SDS application. SDS is also less expensive than Haltec or other hi-dollar units. By the time you complete the MS, the cost will probably be comparable to that of SDS. I am still contemplating...
