Cant start the tii, timing issues. SOLVED

Ok let me break down what Ive done to my once really nicely running tii..

Went to start the car one day, started, ran for 5 sec, died. Repeat x2. Then a pop from the intake manifold, a fuel smelling haze pooring out of the intake.

Parked it.. found out that the little metal springy piece in the center of the distributor cap had broken off, so I ordered a new cap.

Took the distributor out so blunt could tell which tii cap i needed (NOT ADVISED), and forgot to mark where the rotor was, But I did mark on the distributor and the case from the head so I could line those back up.

Got the cap from blunt, installed it with the distributor, and new rotor, and now no starty.

I think I have F'd up my timing so bad that It wont run.

Heres what I have done (8 times already) in the order ive done it.

Take the spark plugs out

Take distributor out

Put a screw driver covered in a rubber glove over the 1st spark plug hole(to make a seal)

Put the car in second gear and bumped it until I heard/felt a poof.

Checked to make sure the piston was there

Go to the drivers side and slowly bump until I saw the timing ball though the hole.

Go back and look to and make sure the piston is all the way up.

Que E-brake and bricks to make sure it doesnt move

Re-inserted and tighten the distributor, making sure my marks line up.

Install spark plugs.

As for the spark plug wires

After reinserting the distributor, i put the #1 spark plug wire so the rotor is pointing at the contact that the #1 wire is attached to.

I then go clockwise with the other wires from there #3, #4, #2, as the manual says the firing order is.

Everything is hooked up, go to try and start it, the starter turns it over, but no firing. I go and turn the distributor SLIGHTLY in either direction, no mass (sometimes there are pauses while turning it over when not in original postion).

I have gotten to run for a few seconds in my 8 tries at doing this, once it ran (ROUGH) for a few seconds, then cut out, another time there was a clank under the valve cover (I turned it off instantly).

The head is freshly re-built and the car was running great before the issue started.

WHAT AM I FN DOING WRONG?!?!?

Ps: Sorry if this thread bashes any newbies

Yours truly,

Zac the "gay ass bitch"

So i need to be using the OT mark not the ball for top dead center? ... that could splain some stuff. Ill go make sure my marks under the valve cover line up as well (rockers?)

Just did it again (and almost melted from the heat of the day), waited for the squeek from the rubber glove, made sure the line on the camshaft was where it should be and the OT mark was in view. still no starting.

can that be 180* off as well?

Thanks for the link... you know your a rock star right? ;)

...... and the flywheel TDC mark (NOT the " BALL " mark)

aligned in the timing hole with the straight edge in the hole

All of my stuff looked exactly like this..

Is is still possible for all of this to line up when on exhaust stroke?

perform a basic task as setting ignition timing? Use the mark on the crankshaft pulley and the plastic cover to find TDC for cylinder number 1. Set the distributor rotor up so that when you install it and the distributor gear meshes with the cam gear it points to the mark on the rim of the distributor. This is cylinder number one. The others will go in the firing order as you mentioned, 3-4-2 in the direction of rotation shown by the arrow on the body of the distributor. This should allow the engine to start and then you will simply adjust it using a timing light to get it set perfectly. If you still have a problem I would say to recheck your valve timing (check to see that the camshaft and crankshaft are synchronized).

If all you did was pull the distributor out and put it back in, then you should have to have checked all the other stuff. I am thinking that you could make sure the points are gapped correctly. Second install the Dizzy and do not tighten the 10mm bolt. Have someone try and start the car. Then slowly spin the Dizzy counter clockwise and clockwise.

I would try to get it to fire before going any further.

After what you explained it sounds like the dizzy is way too advanced or retarded in timing.

PS. Make sure the spark plug wires are going to the correct position for firing order on the dizzy cap. (I did this the night before I was selling a car and put them in backwards. Car would not fire, and the guy was coming over to pick up car. Corrected firing order and it turned right over.)

You have probably flooded the !$% out of the car by cranking it so much.

Any time you crank a tii, the cold start valve will (should) inject. And the injectors will pump fuel. Start with new copper plugs.

Cold start relay is not connected.. no fuel spray. i havent looked for the mark to line the rotor up on the dist. Ill look into that tomorrow

Ok, but any cranking will still force fuel thru the injectors into the cylinders. Pull the plugs and see if they are gas-fouled.

Just so I can come back and find this later

FYI, the BB in the flywheel is not at TDC so if you are using that as a reference then you will be around 27 degrees off, the TDC mark is a line in the flywheel that sometimes has a "0" next to it or a "0T"

Ray- I think im going to get some new spark plugs today, I think its about time anyways. Or there maybe clean the old ones up? Carb cleaner?
