Turbo/Tii Exhaust owners..

Recommended Posts

Fab wasn't that hard. I took the downpipe to a muffler shop and had them make a short piece of the proper diameter with a flare, and then weld that onto the downpipe.

You have to mount the muffler and resonator to get the proper measurements. Be sure to get a new metal 'asshole' for the joint between the muffler and downpipe. It is larger than stock/Tii and can be hard to find.

Oh, yeah, since the muffler exits from the center, you need to cut the rear skirt.

It fits, isn't unreasonably loud, doesn't rattle and is built like a brick shithouse.

I have the factory Turbo BMW exhaust. It fits like a champ and is of excellent quality. Made a drawing of the 11" or so 2-1/8" ID piece that was needed to attach the Turbo exhaust center pipe to the Stahl header on my car. I found a small muffler shop. The owner put two steel flanges on a piece of pipe cut to the correct length, put a slight bend in the section of pipe, then flared the ends. Everything went together well, and the sound is great... no banging against the rear carrier and not loud. I had another shop remove the straight end from the Turbo muffler and weld a bent piece in its place. In this way I didn't have to modify (add a notch) the bodywork of my car, a '73.

That was my next question, and you inadvertently answered it..

The turbo system is then 2"?

I want to retain my I.E shorty/down pipe if at all possible, and its made for the 2" SS system.. I was questioning as to whether the Tii system was 2"... From the cars I have parted, I don't believe they were, but I could be wrong.

Think something like this is a good idea? If one must make up for the 11" anyway??

I "think" that the tii is 2" (or close to that). The Turbo measures right at 2-1/8" / 54mm ID. Either size should work fine on your car, but the Turbo has a unique sound, in my opinion.

The flexible piece should work alright, but you'll need to make sure that there's a way to attach it to the rest of the system.

I'm not a fan of welding in place of bolting things together. And paint all the components with something that will slow the rusting.
