How do I know I have SR144 or SR71 (Sr17?)

Recommended Posts

Or whatever the numbers were. I have a rebuilt one but don't know the model number, it says Bosch with bunch of numbers at different places on the casting. Not that I really care as long as it works (not installed yet) but just curious. It also has a new white label with red Bosch logo, a digital scan tag and some numbers... Where do I look for the model identifier? TIA

Al-

Here is a picture of the numbers from my old 2002 starter:

Here are some numbers cast into the new SR440X housing near the mounting flange

Looks like the Bosch SR71X is the standard replacement starter for the 2002 series http://www.bavauto.com/shop.asp

the # on the mounting flange 1 005 821 211. the # on the back of the starter is 0 001 110 041, the number on the solenoid is 0 331 303 117 617. I may have a bastard child put together using different parts. Looks like a 440x but not sure. It is pretty light, lighter than the old alt.

Al--I have an SR440X and the case number is 1 005 821 194. but this might not mean anything (if it was rebuilt by someone other than Bosch like you said). From outward appearance the SR440X and SR441X look identical, except that the 440X has extended studs on the end of the case that accommodate a mounting bracket. Sounds like you have a 441X.--Jim

I think you are right Jim. I have the one with no studs but bolts. I will remove them and install longer bolts or studs to use the mounting bracket, although I heard that it will fit and work find w/o it.

Al--if it would help, here is a picture of the end of a SR440X starter. The cupped washers serve as spacers to align the bracket with the mounting hole in the block. The ground strap attaches directly to the bracket retaining bolt using the M3 bracket.--Jim

At the junkyard now. Just pulled this exact same starter from a 92 735il. Did you use this starter and did it work for you? Thanks! ASAP trying to decide wether or not to buy! Thanks in advance

Charlie, here comes the deuce. And when you speak of me, speak well!

Don't judge by just the shape/size.  Many rebuilt SR71Xs are the same small size and look externally the same as the SR440X.  Bosch just calls them SR71X instead and puts a sticker on them that says that.

I have no idea if the internals are any different.  But either work fine in a normal 2002.  The original style large body SR71X is much heavier, though.  You also can't bolt the original style front holder bracket to the small SR71X or SR440X (many argue that it's unnecessary though).

yes many BMW starters will work and have different weights and power.  I have one from an early 5 series that weighs about the same as the M3 starter, is more powerful and is about half the price.  After checking its a SR441X.  Its from a 5 series/6 series, M30 engines.  If that 7 series uses the M30 engine it is probably the same starter.
