Ahhh...Granatrot...be still my heart

You know how you keep memories of a certain momentary glimpse of something in your mind?

Well that's how I feel about Granatrot squaries, I saw one go by in the morning waaay back a long time ago (when they were new) and the morning sun just hit that metallic red so it popped....

NMNA etc etc, just wish I had one in this color, but alas I have the Chamonix curse.

Also a little pricey, no?

Is fuel efficiency really what we need most desperately? I say what we really need is a car that can be shot when it breaks down.

Let me piggyback on your story:

I was visiting my sister at UGA (GO DAWGS!) back in the early 80's and a granatrot roundie zipped by me headed to ATL. It was sunset, but this thing glistened like new money! Back then I was strictly into British steel: MG, Triumph were the only "real" cars to me as a college student. But, alas, memories of the granatrot roundie still linger in my mind over 25 years later...

In my opinion, Keith Kreeger's Stella is the best example of a "better than new" Granatrot 74tii.

his car is not granatrot, it's a "pearl metallic red" that he picked out.

Oh yeah - you are correct. Sorry about that. I believe His car WAS granatrot before.

ps: That second picture is from the 2002AD 'cars for sale' ad. I almost bought that one.

yeah, his car was originally granatrot, but when he bought it, it had been completely painted over "re-sale red". it was so rusty that he then transplanted the body from a siennabraun 2002 which was then painted the non-factory pearl metallic red color. it's all documented on his website.

I am a loyal follower of (and regularly provide links to) Keith's restoration website. It was instrumental when I was looking for a tii in late 2006. I met up with Keith in KC during a business trip and he let me drive Stella before the interior was complete.

She's beautiful and runs like no other 2002 I've ever driven.

Nice car, low mileage (and the documentation to back it up) and recently gone through.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
