Tunnel

Last progress pics before the Christmas and NY holidays.

The new tunnel is being tacked in place. It's higher than I was expecting because the top of the s2000 gearbox is high and the workshop guys think it'll look best staying that high all the way back rather than dropping it down aft of the gearstick, and it'll make a nice armrest. I'm not convinced yet, comments welcome. It does fit the racecar vibe which the car will have anyway with no back seat, half cage, wide wheel flares, etc.

The black thing hanging under the dash is the AC/heater and the slightly raised section by the floor is a recess for the exhaust on one side and fluid lines on the other.

I placed the seat in just to kid myself that its nearly finished.

Nice work, but it does look kinda heavy. And the fact that it ramps down at the rear shows that there is useless space. Maybe move the ramp down piece forward, after the arm rest function, and run the rear section flat?

Yea, that'd make some space for a hand brake too.

I would drop it down. One of the pleasures of the 2002 is the airiness. I wouldn't willingly give up space.

I wonder if the seats are being moved outboard and driver's seat will not line up with wheel. Have you sat in there to see where your elbows end up? Stock seats kind of overlap tunnel. Hand brake will look a bit odd and may foul your elbow. Can you actually operate it when seated?

What the hell is in there? It's quite low at the fire-wall, and at the back. Just high in the middle. I'd have at least made it curved. Where does shifter end up?

I may have missed it, but have you mounted engine /trans in place? I'd be making tunnel to fit over an actual unit.

The workshop is back from summer hols so I visited and we reviewed the tunnel design. It needs to be that high because of the S2000 box

and that height is being continued aft because its a perfect height for an armrest. The handbrake will be recessed into it and will even have room for a removeable vertical handbrake bar for gymkhanas. I think it looks bigger/worse than it actually is but with the new Recaro seat placed more or less in the right place its very comfortable and surprisingly roomy. When we get to trimming we'll use high density foam to round the tunnel shape a bit. There's heaps or room for three pedals directly ahead of the seat and we can place the new steering column wherever we want. It'll end up with a somewhat modern cockpit feel, not for the purists.
