‘67 1600-2 Build

The bodywork is almost done. This week I finished up painting the hood. In hindsight I wish I went with a slightly more off white, but I’m still happy with it.

I was going to go for a full blown patina paint job, but chickened out. Instead my mindset for this project was to imagine myself in the 60’s building a race car. Just kind of slapping on some paint in the backyard and go racing.

The blemishes you see in the paint are on purpose. I sprayed some red oxide primer, threw some wet coffee grounds and the sprayed it lightly with the Oxford white paint. Just enough to get a head start on the chips and scratches that will come in time.

Next on my list is to hand paint some meatballs.

That's a fun idea! Hard to say how it looks in person.

It looks pretty authentic in person. The only thing throwing it off is how shiny the paint is.

Good thing is…I’m not stressed about the paint so I can have all the fun I want on the road. 😆

Loving the two-tone look.  Wondering if you did your own body work, and, if so, did you have prior experience.  Trying to assess the level of difficulty and the risks of tackling by a rookie.

I did!

I've done mild body work in the past on my 71 1602, but I'd still consider myself a rookie. This time I wanted to take on everything. YouTube and facebook groups helped me tremendously. I learned to mig weld, prep metal for epoxy, how to properly use body filler and 3M panel bonding, block sanding and paint.  It's a lot of work but I've enjoyed all of it.

I'd say go for it, unless your your goal is perfection.
