Center Console and E30 Speakers - BMW Parts Bin Upgrade
"He made from one blood every nation of men..." Acts 17:26
The center console had been hacked into for some sort of speaker install and was looking a bit worn. The face of the console was an interesting design I'd not seen anywhere, with two holes for gauges in the bottom and a center pocket. I decided to refinish it as opposed to making my own.
The sides were cut out, and covered in vinyl, center was painted wrinkle black, and the shifter surround was also recovered and I stitched up a new shift boot with the accent color.
After removing the speakers that were butchered into the doors, and making new door panels to repair the damage I was nearly set on no stereo at all. The factory AM/FM with one center speaker was basic even for '74.
After toying with completely removing it all and going with wind and engine noise or buying a new or vintage headunit, speakers, custom housings, perhaps even wiring an amp and a small sub...
I remembered I'm cheap (ahem, frugal) and I really don't want to spend money on all new stuff when I do have a few items in my parts bins that I can use, and that's good enough for now. I can plan for future expansion now if I want it later.
Parts I had on hand were a cheap Pioneer CD player with Bluetooth and USB input, two 6.5" speakers, a set of e30 rear premium speaker housings.
The e10 has no provision for front speakers which is why the previous owners hacked into the front doors. I looked over several options for placement and decided on making new under dash panels that can hold speakers. I had no under dash panels anyway so I need something to cover up the wiring. I shaped up some panels, covered them in vinyl, mounted the speakers and some grills and they are ready to go.
In the rear I'd closed off the hacked in rear 6x9 speaker holes in the rear deck that let in fuel and exhaust smell from the trunk. (hint, avoid any holes from trunk to passenger cabin).
I want to avoid any more holes so I just placed the e30 rear housings on the rear deck until I find some shallow mount 5.25" speakers.
