Disassembly Continues...

As I have some time here and there, I've been continuing to take things apart. The front and rear suspension have been completely removed and fully disassembled. Overall things came apart very easily. There was plenty of dirt in areas. The rear subframe have about 3/4" of dirt built up on it, but on the plus side the subframe itself looks nearly new underneath all the dirt. Either way everything will get blasted and refinished. I found a set of Bilstein inserts in the front that look decent. I'll likely have them rebuilt and reused rather than buying new given the current cost of new units. The rear shocks look original and will get replaced.

All the rubber subframe bushings came output pretty easy with just a little heat and some pressure. Wheel bearings also all came out fairly easy just tapping them from the inside out. Rear castle nuts would have been tricky off the car without a big impact gun. I also used a hydraulic puller to get the rear hubs off. One side especially took quite a bit of pressure and heat before it slowly worked its way off in little steps.

I pulled off the master cylinder. It doesn't exactly look great. Price on new ones seems to have gone up quite a bit. Not sure if it is worth trying to rebuild this one or just replace.

I've also pulled out most of the interior. I'm not a fan of the blue anyway, even if I were the materials are pretty badly sun damaged and very brittle. I'll likely redo all in black, but have plenty of time before I need to make any decisions on that. Dash has a few bad cracks in it, so will need to decide direction with it. Most positive with the interior and front/rear glass out is the rust damage is really not too bad at all. Worst is around the rear glass a few small sections will need to be cut out and replaced. The front windshield area just has very minor surface rust in a few spots. Footwells are also in similar condition with just minor surface rust that will clean up without issues.

Still lots more to remove. Possibly over Christmas I'll get the rest of the parts off the body.

I have a 74tii from long beach that I drove for 10 years and decided to take apart.  It is in Chamonix with the blue interior.  Luckily just some surface rust from the beach salt air.  Keep up the nice work!

In between about 1 million activities last weekend, I did find a bit of time to finish disassembly of the entire front end. Lots of surface rust, but nothing that won't clean up without much fuss. The battery tray has had an especially rough life, but I'm just going to remove it altogether and relocate the battery elsewhere. Most concerning would be what the inside of the main frame rails look like. Will have to see what is best way to treat them. It sure was convenient not having the front end body work attached while doing this.

I got the doors, side windows, trim, ... all taken apart. Overall things came apart fairly easily, but some of the chrome trim is in bad shape and will need to be replaced. The larger, stronger pieces should be ok to clean up and reuse. Also all of the rubber seals just disintegrate as I touch them. Each one that turns to dust in my hands I wonder how much fun it will be to find a replacement. Part of me hopes some vendor will have a comprehensive 02 resto kit that provides all rubber in one nice bundle, but the other part thinks that would almost be cheating. 😁

I also found something odd when removing the rear side windows. On both sides there was a single codder pin holding the front of the window to the metal bracket. That can't be factory, but also seems like an odd thing to have been replaced at some point on both sides. Here is a picture from one side.

Here are a few of where things sit now. More surface rust, but nothing to bad.

I am reasonably-certain that cotter pin is the factory assembly method (based on having taken a few dozen apart).

Interesting. Not what I would have expected from BMW. I guess it works though.
