Intro to my 67 project

Back in January 2019 I picked up a '67 1600-2. I've always preferred the early cars so despite some of the rust issues I picked it up.

I've welded (flux) before, but I wanted to get better, so I told myself, "F*** it, let's buy a C25 bottle and get good at grinding."  😁

First order of business was to contact the BMW group archive.

"The BMW 1602 VIN 1529238 was manufactured on June 19th, 1967 and delivered on June 29th, 1967 to the BMW importer Hoffman Motors Corp. in New York City. The original colour was Polaris metallic, paint code 060."

The day I brought the 1600 home.

Of course, the original metallic paint failed, and the first owner opted to paint the exterior white (common back then.) The 1600 lived most of it's life in the DC / VA area, so the outer rockers and wheel arches were toast. Surprisingly, the floor boards, inner rockers, frame rails, and shock towers were relatively rust free.

My plan is to cut any rust I can find and replace with new metal (I'm about 3/4 the way through.), then I'm going to cut and weld the rear wheel arches in prep for some pig cheeks (I've already done this.) Paint color is still up in the air. The first 02 I fell in love with was a friends Polaris '68, and I love the color on stock 02s; however, I don't find it interesting enough for my project. So, right now I'm considering Turf, Derby, Evergreen (M roadster), or Leaf Green (Porsche.) Who knows though, I've got plenty of time to decide.

Anyhow, my next entry will be about some of the history of 1529238.

Those old things? 😃 Unfortunately the Borranis did not come with the sale, nor did the Talbots, Alpina headers and sway bars.
