Time to Come Clean, I Bought a 1600 Cabriolet

Meet Veronica, a 1969 1600 Cabriolet which was restored in Japan in the 1980s. The seller imported it the US 30 years ago and spent its US life in a garage in Blue Hill Maine. Mario Langsten of Vintage Sports & Restoration brought this to my attention this past July. Finalized the deal Friday September 13, 2019. There is a short to do list to make her safe and reliable for us to enjoy this fall.

Very nice Andrew,

Looks in superb state taking Veronica's age in account.

Seems like a time capsule, congrats

Congratulations!

Look at that cool old cast iron distributor!!

Will it be replaced with another 123?

123 if the current distributor is worn out.

Jim Dinker will be honored--his daughter's name is Veronica...

Looks like a cool ride; looking forward to seeing it in person--Mid America 2020?

Miss Veronica already has a space reserved in the 2020 Mid America caravan...but won't Vern be jealous?

Vern may like some time off. Drove him 21K miles last year.

Here's the car's story as relayed by Veronica's seller, she used to be called 'Putt-Putt'.

A little history: the car was imported into Japan and sat on the show room floor about 2 years before it was sold in 1971. I found it in Osaka in 2001. Yoshida-san of Simple Auto “let me buy it” with the promise I would take good care of it. The sense of obligation in the transaction is easier to understand in Japanese.

I proceeded to court my wife in the car. We enjoyed romps in Tokyo, mainly on crisp winter nights, top down and blankets. With friends in the back, they were urban sleigh rides.

I brought the car back to the US in 2003 and enjoyed it, in the end, the amount of time spent sitting vs being driven was not healthy for the car.

We are pleased the car is in the caring hands of genuine enthusiasts.

Left hand drive!  I would have thought it would be RHD in Japan... the stars aligned in your favor!

I am super impressed by the condition, looks like a complete joy to work on, even though it looks like that won't be very much.

I humbly offer my help if you have any lighting issues, want to update headlights, restore or upgrade rear lights, anything you need. I put my skills at your disposal.  It probably doesn't need much, based on the condition of the rest of it.  I had converted my 72 to amber instrument lights, easier on the eyes and simple to do -- or undo, if you wanted to.  I have an idea it's a 12V system, but I do have some 6V bulbs if I am wrong.

ENJOY!
