Misselwood Tour & Virtual Concours

Saturday July 18th we drove Veronika to the Misselwood Estate at Endicott College in Beverly MA and participated in the first Misselwood Driving Series Tour. The drive from our house to the Estate takes ~2 hours. The tour started at 10 am, we made it there at 9:50 am. The Tour wound its way through Beverly and followed tree lined streets with antique homes eventually leading to open fields then winding our way through to Newburyport MA. We were privilege to have talented Photographer Josh Sweeny

Veronika’s Debut

Drove her down to Harpswell Neck to Pammy’s Ice Cream. Sunny & cool. My friend drove his 1930 Lincoln Dual Cowl Phaeton after a 5 year engine rebuild. Both cars garnered all the attention. The top down drive home was pretty cold.

Vern & E30 M3s

Vern’s starter was replaced on Wednesday June 3rd at VSR with one from an E30 M3. Two things were discovered. The cold start relay internals had been amateurishly soldered and had a cut resistor. Luckily I bought two spares years ago & replaced it Thursday morning.    The other discovery, E30 M3s are absolutely amazing. This was the first one I’ve driven. The speed limit formula of double it add 20 is pure magic! No, I didn’t do 90 in 35 though I was well over 35.

Nor'East '02ers Social Distancing Drive 5/16/2020

In honor of the original date for The Vintage in Asheville NC. The Nor'East '02ers had a Social Distancing Lunch & Drive along the New Hampshire Seacoast and wrapping up at the old Bavarian Autosport parking lot.    Only issue was Vern's starter crapped out, with the help of 3 friends, push started him twice. The starter gear is not extending, it just spins in the housing.

10 Years Ago Today

Found this amazing 1973 2002Tii on ebay back in May 2010. It checked all the boxes for me. Did my due diligence during the auction, then hemmed & hawed for days. Today is the 10th anniversary of my winning bid. We have travelled over 120K miles together in those 10 years and have had a great time smiling every mile.

No more Tippy Toes for Veronika!

Before & after Eibach progressive rate front springs requiring a fresh wheel alignment completed May 7th. The combination of the front Tii anti-sway bar and the Eibach springs have transformed the car's handling. These changes have made her feel more solid & less vague while keeping the steering light.

2 Photoshoots in 2 Days

As Many of you know we live in a beautiful area of Maine with picturesque vistas and excellent locations. Across the street is lovely Thomas Point Beach, 85 manicured acres on the New Meadows River. I shot Vern here in the Fall of 2010 and still use those photos. The other great locations are down Route 24 to Great Island, Orrs Island & Bailey Island. it's 17 miles of quintessential Maine with the only Cribstone Bridge in the US. It's a latticework of granite blocks to allow free flow of the

Door Handle Gasket Replacement

Replaced the door handle gaskets which were mostly missing. In the process I cleaned the old wax stuck under the old ones and cleaned the greasy gunk from outside of the door handles. The driver side door card didn't want to release at the top, took some prying and was successful. Driver side was easy to replace the gaskets. Passenger side door card was easy to remove the but the 10 mm handle bolt was the most difficult part.   The next & ultimately last 2 projects are replacing th

Replacing an E-Brake Button

Success with very little cussing. The push buttons unscrew. Due to the spring tension & the old button was very damaged, I used my medium size adjustable “channel lock” pliers. There is a mailable washer behind the button, I replaced this with a thin metal washer that covered the end of the spring coil. This keeps the button from twisting the spring when threading the new button on the rod.  There’s no need to remove the emergency brake lever or the rubber grip.

Veronika Gets A Sway-Bar

Veronika is now a little sportier. Installed Verns original front Tii front sway-bar & hardware. What I like about it so far is it is pretty invisible and matches her under garments very well.

Veronika Instrument Cluster Refurbish

Removed, dismantled, cleaned, taped, painted, untaped, cleaned some more, reassembled & reinstalled the instrument cluster. It's a huge improvement, the glass was filthy. Used Dupli-Color Chrome, it's a bright silver, not like the original shiny chromed plastic.

Trading Places

Drove Vern to Vintage Sports & Restoration for a couple of little jobs. Picked up Veronika after extensive reconditioning over the Winter. Drove Veronika back home.    Vern is solid, sure footed, fast & quiet. Veronika is light, airy, slower & loud!   Both are a blast to drive.

Vern Wiper Video

Sorted Vern’s wiper speeds. 1st is delay, which is ~3 seconds. 2nd is normal speed. There is no fast speed as 2002s usually have. This delay feature, like on 3.0 Coupes, was made possible by Vintage Sports & Restoration.         Vern Wipers.MOV

Veronika's VSR Spa Treatment

Veronika has been getting a lot of love at the VSR Spa. Photos courtesy of Chris Langsten.   Photo work list: Modified Wiper Motor Cover. New Side Hood Seals. Top Perimeter Snap Strips restored and installed. All trunk Panels recovered in Elephant Skin. New Chrome Dash Trims installed. Now those are a big WOW factor!   The To Do List is getting shorter! Hoping restored seats return from the upholstery shop the week after next.

Veronika off to the Upholsterer

Veronika's off to the upholstery shop. They found the original seats have provisions for headrests and the cool original seat vinyl was found under a later upholstery job!

Two Small Projects

Finished two small projects. Didn't take long to attend to these little details. Painted the hood supports black and finished the Cold Air Intake System.

Restored NK Wheels

After 2 years of needing one large flange NK wheel to complete a set, I was able to source 2 more for a total of 5. Dropped them off at the local wheel shop for media blasting and Satin Black powder coating. $500 later they are back. Slapped on the better hubcaps and need to decide on tires. Will most likely go on Veronika when the time comes.

Veronika VSR Visit & Cocomats

Visited Veronika at VSR. Fitted the Cocomat templates and went over punch list items for The Misselwood Concours in July.    Snow in the Perpetual Winterlands means driving season is over for all the low sodium BMWs. Back to the 2007 X3 6-speed.

Award & Hagerty Article

Vern's Concours 3rd in Classic Clean arrived in the mail the other day! Also several friends have sent me the Oktoberfest Hagerty article by Brad Phillips "5 reasons why BMW ownership is irresistible"   https://www.hagerty.com/articles-videos/articles/2019/10/24/5-reasons-why-bmw-ownership-is-irresistible?utm_source=SFMC&utm_medium=email&utm_content=Daily_News_Monday_Oct_28&fbclid=IwAR1cw87tnSEyeZxxnd93tOCS-oqMQ6T93kI5ZSMcFX4arfbAGFOp9HnppuE

BMW CCA O'Fest & BMW Classic CCA Highlands Tour

50th Anniversary BMW CCA Oktoberfest was pretty awesome. With a few exceptions. 2 iconic BMWs were in the lobby of the hotel. Yale Rachlin's 1974 2002Tii & Parker Spooner's 1970 2800 CS. At dinner, I was notified by Paul Cain "There were not enough cars in Classic Super Clean" so I was bumped down to "Classic Clean". It rained Wednesday on the Concours. I discovered too late there were 6 cars in Classic Super Clean, after Vern had been judged! Needless to say I felt a bit cheated by this fia
