New Door Window Trim

Bought new door window trim assemblies from Paul Wegweiser at bimmer.com. They arrived Friday September 27th 2019. Installed them Saturday morning. Needed to use the old assembly clips near the vent windows. They did take a little persuasive force to install with the new welting and squeegees. If your window welting and squeegees are shot, buy these assemblies while they are available.

Broken Grill Slat Fix

One of the slats on Vern’s passenger side grill broke. I tried several backer rods which were all to big. I wound up using a WD40 straw so I don’t have to worry about galvanic corrosion.  The repair worked better than expected and pleased with the results. Unfortunately I found other slats with stress cracks, so I’m going to reinforce them before they break. Checking the driver side grill too.

Time to Come Clean, I Bought a 1600 Cabriolet

Meet Veronica, a 1969 1600 Cabriolet which was restored in Japan in the 1980s. The seller imported it the US 30 years ago and spent its US life in a garage in Blue Hill Maine. Mario Langsten of Vintage Sports & Restoration brought this to my attention this past July. Finalized the deal Friday September 13, 2019. There is a short to do list to make her safe and reliable for us to enjoy this fall.

Misselwood Tour & Concours 2019

What a spectacular weekend! Had what many considered the best spot. In the shade literally all day, nestled among the trees, after a few hours I tired of cleaning up the tree debris, I closed Vern up. The Misselwood Concours is a top-tier show. The venue is enchanting and beautiful. The perfect setting for a Concours of this caliber. I've been to Amelia Island, Pebble Beach, Hilton Head, Greenwich and Misselwood is my new favorite.    Vern and I were the last car to leave the Misselwoo

Restored Dash Installed

Picked up Vern today from VSR. The Just Dashes restored dashboard has been installed and looks excellent. Also replaced a burned out 'city light' on the driver side. The Petri hub cover received a freshening as well, it was cracked and missing a couple of chunks. Can't tell the cover was repaired, that's how good it is.

2019 Mid America '02 fest Recap

Just returned from a 3,670 mile round trip to Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The 19th Mid-America '02 Fest was the largest one ever! 74 2002s, if you count the one on the trailer, an NK Sedan, a Bavaria and an i8 also attended. Doug Riparetti, from Seaside CA, drove 1935 miles and I presented him with the prestigious Iron Butt Award on Saturday night. He travelled 90 miles farther than my 1845 miles.     The event weather was perfect, cool and sunny. Friday we had a delightful drive to Roge

Vern is Back!

After another winter at the VSR Spa, Vern is back home again. Newly chromed bumpers, completely restored vent window frames, new carpet, restored and rebuilt seats, modified wiper system with intermittent delay, paint retouched and looking better than ever.   Dropped off Athena, who developed a stumble along the way, which will be addressed...I do not care for her original distributor with points!    Chris Langsten followed me as we sped along at a rapid pace on NH 101. Mid America '02 Fest 2019!

Getting excited for the Mid-America 2002 Fest 2019!    2015 Vern and I won the Hard Luck Award as Vern's water pump failed. 2016, 2017 & 2018 we won the coveted Iron Butt Award.   After winning the "Iron Butt" for 3 years in a row, I am bowing out of the competition for it. I plan to present the award going forward.

Trunk Side Boards

A while ago I bought a beat up set of trunk side boards from a FAQ member. Then bought a couple of pieces of dry erase/chalk board from Lowes for $6.06 each. Traced the old panels and cut them out with my jigsaw.    Delivered them to VSR to be covered in “elephant skin” type vinyl withe the other trunk boards.    Made another set for a good friend’s 2002 as well. Shipping was twice what I had estimated.   Thinking of making a few sets if I am able to get more of the

Carpet & Seats

Here are the photos of the new GAHH carpet installed. The seats are back from the upholstery shop with new BMW 'horsehair' pads & headrest escutcheons in the front and either an older set of unused 'horsehair' or new foam pads in the rear. Included older pictures of the interior to show the color difference.

New Hood Roundel

A friend of mine is restoring his 3.0CS, posted he wanted new old style raised letter roundels. I don't recall the specific details if I found them or he found them. So Vern and I are saying goodbye to the hand panted Testors roundels.

Winter Project Progress in December

All the cosmetic work has been completed. Have to admit that there was tiny amount of water migration at the lower rear driver side fender lip. A 2 x6 inch section was cut out and replaced. There was also a paint crack at the base of the passenger side B pillar which was stripped and welded.   Currently replacing the old Bimmer Parts Co. carpet with a German square weave from GAHH. The old carpet will live on in a friend's Malaga 2002.   Font seats are at the upholsterer and

Winter Projects

Vern has been delivered to VSR for a few winter projects. The main project is to determine why the right rear, passenger side, wheel bearings have failed 3 times in 18K miles. The other projects are some routine maintenance like oil change with a general health & body checkup so he's ready for Spring and the Mid America '02 Fest. This year the original restored dash will replace the current one piece.

Hilton Head Concours Saturday Car Club Showcase

The BMW Classic CCA Lowcountry Discovery is coming to it's end. Saturday the weather was clear and cool. We caravanned over to the Point Royal Golf Course and were parked along the 18th fairway. I cleaned and polished all the road grime and water spots off so he would look his best. Celebrating 40 years of M1s saw, Lance White's red & Procar, Bobby Rahal's white, Dirk de Groen's dark blue, Scott & Fran Hughe's orange and BMW NA's Procar It was an impressive display to say the least. Rear Wheel Bearing Number 2

As some of you will recall, on the way to Mid America '02 Fest. I had to have my passenger side rear wheel bearing replaced. Well had it fail after between 7,500 & 8K miles. This time I while on the BMW Classic CCA Lowcountry Discovery Tour. After calling around to a few places and setting up an appointment, I sent Mario an e-mail. He texted me Karl Troy, European Road & Racing, call him. Karl was very personable when I called and explained the situation. I arrived at 12:15 and Vern was

Door Lock Adventure

So when I was in Kitchener Ontario visiting a friend, I went to unlock the passenger door and the key wouldn’t return to 90 degrees. The last time was in Pittsburgh and Dave Mason was able to get my key out.    This time was more dramatic and eventful. We called a locksmith who’s efforts proved fruitless after 15 minutes he admitted defeat. I offered to pay him for the house call yet he declined since he hadn’t been successful.    So it was on to Plan B. Which was remove the
