Lightweight alternator

After driving with a big 533 alternator for a few years i finally replaced it with something a little more speedy. This one if from Performance Distributors and is 6lb and produces 50 AMP. Installation is not too complicated. The smaller of the mounting holes is threaded for the M8 bolt, same size as used for 2002 alternator mounting. A spacer was used to place the alternator in the proper spot. Source

EFI Installation. Part 1. Parts

A little late into the off-season but planning is over and installation has started. Over the next few weeks I am going to re-plumb the car with high pressure line and fittings that came from LPI Racing (http://www.lpiracing.com), fuel pump that came from 2002 Haus (http://www.2002haus.com), header from Ireland Engineering (http://www.bmw2002.com), throttle bodies from Extrudabody, (http://www.extrudabody.com/) clean up wiring under the hood, remove all old ignition and fuel supply parts, and

Ignition issues

As some of you might have heard about 2 weeks prior to the Nationals and right after the head was rebuilt, the car started to misfire badly. I found the misfire of cylinder #1 and thought it was due to a leaking gasket that is on the water neck and the first intake. After fixing that, the misfire did not go away. And what i discovered is that the misfire was on cylinders #1 and #3. Source

Broken Rockers

A few broken rockers did not stop KGB-Racing BMW 2002 from attending SCCA Solo Nationals in Lincoln, NE. Three weeks prior to the departure date at American Autocross Series event at Marina CA a disaster struck. In the end of the day car lost power and start making a lot of noise from the engine bay. Fear we had was that the bearing were gone, but to a pleasant surprise, after taking the valve cover off we discovered that the problem was in the head. Exhaust rocker for #1 piston was br

Fuel Pump

Carter fuel pump that has been running in the car for about 4 years has died at the last SFR SCCA event at Golden Gate Fields after one run. Golden Gate Field is usually good for KGB-Racing with multiple PAX placing in top 10. This time we had to push the car back on the trailer New fuel pump was acquired from Gottelli Speed Shop in South San Francisco and we were racing again in Stockton with Sacramento Chapter. steve k. SAC SCCA Event at Mather

Last weekend was the second annual Shriner Children's Hospital Charity Event hosted by Sacramento Chapter of SCCA. KGB-Racing car number 26 was present to compete in FSP on Saturday June 10th with the best time of 55.5 seconds on the second run. The course resembled a 5 leaf clover with a lot of surface changes going from concrete to asphalt. 2 member of BMW 2002 FAQ (http://www.bmw2002faq.com), Norm and Ali (index.php?option=com_gallery2 Itemid=29 g2_itemId=1357), have joined Steve K.

Bay Area 02 Show: a great success!

First of all I have to thank guys at EDGE Motorworks (http://www.edgemotorworks.com)for getting the car ready in time. With new front pads and rotors and new wheel studs all the way around, the car made it to show. Presented in its race gear with all of the stickers and on race rubber it was a nice site. There were over 100 cars at show ranging from concourse restorations to 35 year old daily driven originals. 6 factory Turbos, as many Tourings, one convertible, and an electric '02 we

Repair progress

Not much progress has been done in the last week, mostly parts research and search. New studs are coming from Ireland Engineering (http://www.bmw2002.com/). The old studs were Moroso 7/16 diameter and 3 long. the new studs are once again metric. They are made by ARP. Thread is 12x1.5 and the length is 65mm. Another change int he car will be the front brakes. Thanks to the recommendation from Jeremy i an going away from Hawk Blue bads since they seem to overheat and cook my rotors in
