Clear Silicone Caulk
Spray Bottle of Soapy Water
25 ft. of 3/16” Cotton Rope
Masking Tape

Lockstrip Tool (I used this one from Aegis Tools.) Apparently, AEGIS Tools no longer sells the roller lockstrip tool. You can get it here now: https://www.hitechglazing.com/product/2781009/40273

*The installation steps are identical for both windshields.*

1. Lay the windshield down and slip the seal over the edges.


2. Wrap the rope twice around the seal, pushing it into the slot. Tape the ends against the inside of the glass.


3. Spray the seal edges to soak the rope with soapy water.

4. Lift the windshield and seal into the opening, being careful not to allow the seal to come out.



5. With one person applying pressure from the outside, pull the rope from the inside, being careful not to pull any of the headliner with it.


6. Once the rope has been entirely pulled and the seal is in, use the caulking gun to run a small bead of clear caulk inside the inside and outside edges of the seal.



7. Once the caulking is in, use the lockstrip tool to install the lockstrip. This is a bit of a challenge and requires a little skill. Go slow and be careful. If you have a small section (1” or less) that pops out of the seal, use the small flathead screwdriver to pop it back in.



8. Trim the lockstrip after installation to fit with as small a gap as possible.

9. Slip the lockstrip cup over one end of the lockstrip and use the screwdrivers to pop it in, using the soapy water to help with lubrication.


You’re done!


Screw in your visors and handles and pat yourself on the back.

Instruction for Step 2 "Wrap rope twice around the seal" is incorrect and misleading.  It simply overlaps a little where the ends meet not inserted over itself a second time.

First of all nice article, but silicon is a nono. A  properly installed window doesnt need that. You can do it alone but it is best to have a buddy with you. If you do it alone, turn the rope around so that you start at the bottom edge of the window.

As for the tool, I have personally found it best to remove the white roller, and using thee tool with the working end towards the direction you are using it.


Also, new gaskets are lousy fits, I changed my gaskets to some old but still good, they fit better. Actually I almost lost my rear window on the highway because the new gasket didnt hold the window properly. Every time I closed the door the window was pushed a littlebit out. I didnt notice until it was almost too late.

From my experience of installing many dozens of '02 windows professionally, I've found that it's much easier and the window sits in better if the rope is started at the bottom. To pull one side around the bottom corner, then the other. If one starts the rope across the top, the window wants to fall out. If one starts from the bottom, gravity is helping you.

I followed these instructions, thanks for the write up.


My pointers/comments...


Rope: I doubled up the rope because I wasn't sure if I should have (based on the instructions). For the rear windshield, it wasn't useful as it went well. In the front, I was happy I did it. A small section along the bottom corner the rubber wasn't pulled it by the first string but the second one did the job. I think it's good insurance and would do it again on front and rear.


Silicon, do a super thin bead of silicon (I thought I was putting a thin one but apparently not thin enough). It squeezes out the sides and is not fun to clean off the paint.
