A later issue of R&T corrected their statement about the apparent lack of performance difference between the 1600 and 2002...seems their press pool '02 was fitted with a 1600 flywheel and thus the wrong timing marks, and the ign timing was way retarded, causing the (comparatively) poor performance 11.3 seconds to 60.

Note that the road test car is a very early one with the embossed hood trim and two piece wheel covers with those funky square vent holes in the trim rings, so it was most likely one of the first US spec cars off the assembly line.  That same car was road tested by several other west coast car magazines plus either Popular Science or Mechanix Illustrated based on the license plate.  Would love to know its VIN--probably 1660001 or 2.

Interesting, do you know what issue it was?

Have you guys seen the current issue (December, 2017) of Car and Driver?  There is a good article on page 14 in that issue where they call the 2002 "The birth of the sports sedan".

I have never seen those hubcaps before. They look awesome.

Yes, but the trim rings, which are separate from the hub caps (as Mike S. mentioned), are cheap flimsy things.  Stated differently, they don't get better looking as you move closer, and see how thin they are!
