Tii stalled after turning off fog lights

Hey all,

 

I had a bizarre occurrence yesterday as I was pulling out of a parking spot. I turned on the fog lights - I sometimes drive with them on if it's later in the evening in my area - but changed my mind. As soon as I turned them off, my car stalled. I was successful in restarting, but I was naturally a little on edge driving home. (Luckily it's a short trip, but Santa Clara has horrendous drivers and I was driving during rush hour.)

 

My tii has always had difficulty starting when cold - it takes several attempts with long cranking and feathering the gas, even when I let the fuel pump build up pressure in the system. Did I have a short that cut power to the fuel pump or distributor?

 

I've got a new dual, braided ground strap from Bavarian Auto that I've yet to install, so I'm hoping that will help smooth out some issues. My fuel gauge jumps around and drops when I press the brake, so a wiring issue has always been evident. Admittedly, I've put it off too long.

 

Also, does anyone know of a good 02 (particularly tii) mechanic in the Santa Clara/San Jose area? And someone that can/will do a full re-wiring?

Contact Casey Motorsports in Petaluma, I know it's a bit of a hike from where you are. Their knowledge of all things Tii is worth the trip. Tom Jones is the closest thing to a 2002Tii savant/guru in the San Fran area that I know.

 

When I was there last May for an oil change, before the Brisbane show, Tom also did an inspection of Vern and made a to do list when I for when I got home to Maine.

 

In the meantime, you need to make a ground wire for your gauge cluster. There are two brass knurled nuts that are for the gas and temp gauges. The wire should look like this U____U__________________________U attach the two close U connectors the the knurled nuts, attach the single U connector to a ground under the dash. Make sure to make the wire from the 2nd U to the end U long enough to remove the gauge cluster. Use the search function if you need more details.

Your tii electric fuel pump runs off fuse 11; is this where the fog lights get their power?  Also, if you have a '73, the seat belt warning light circuit is on this fuse--and that doesn't show even in the factory wiring diagram.  If the sensor in the seat and seat belt shorts out, it'll pop that fuse and if you have a tii, leave you dead in the water.

 

I know that doesn't have much to do with your fog lights unless they're on the same circuit, but the fog light/stalling may be coincidental.
