I picked up a front and rear bumper quite awhile back with the intent on doing the swap on my 74. I have a vision for the look of my car, but not quite the budget to get it all done at once.

 

That being said, I finally got around to removing the park benches and now I am looking at installation of the bumpers I have.

 

The rear one I picked up had no overriders, but I bought some from a friend and they seem to fit with no problems. I am going with a set of short bumpers as I might eventually do flares. I don't think I'll run into any issues with the rear 

 

The front one however seems to be giving me some issues. I believe there are different variations of the overriders now that I look at the ones I have. My front bumper sides have the rubber strip (1973 only?) and the front center section has 4 holes, looks flatter, but no rubber strip. I appear to have one correct overrider (looks as though it has a notch for the rubber strip on one side) and one that does not look like it would fit as well. 

 

This is by no means a show car, so I am not opposed to removing the rubber strip on the sides (possibly replacing it with a 3M generic trim moulding) or I could notch the other overrider that I have. Thirdly, I can just source the correct overriders and sell the ones i have (most preferable)

 

Can anybody confirm my suspicions that there are different years for the overrider brackets and which ones I should look for and or a possible solution to making what I have work?

Chrome front bumpers:

 

Early cars--those with 166/167xxxx VINs have front bumpers with no rubber moulding, thus no notches in the overriders for the moulding.

 

"Modell 71" cars--beginning with 257xxxx VINs have rubber moulding only on the side pieces, not the center bar.  Thus the overriders have a notch on the outboard side to accomodate the moulding.  

 

1973 (only) cars have the same three front bumper blades, but completely different mounting brackets and bumper guards.  The 73 bumper guards are pointy and much lower than the earlier ones.  They also have moulding notches only on the outboard side. 

 

You can use the '73 pointy bumper guards with bumpers from any "modell 71" car (with mouldings), and you can use the tall 71-72 bumper guards on a '73 bumper.  The pointy bumper guards and much heavier mounting brackets on the '73s were to comply with the Federal interim bumper standard for that year only:  2.5 mph.  The 5 mph standard for 74 and later cars resulted in the heavy aluminum bumpers and shock mounts on all US squarelights.

PS--there are some small die cast spacers that go behind the bumper blades and guards so those parts will mount flat on the bumper brackets.  Make sure you have them before you begin your install.

So you're saying that I can find a 1971 model right side (of the car) bumper overrider that should have a notch on just the right side to accommodate the rubber strip that was installed only on the outside corners of the bumpers?

 

part numbers indicating the over-rider:

3/66-3/71 LEFT - 51 11 9 558 115

3/66-3/71 RIGHT - 51 11 9 558 116

4/71-7/77 LEFT - 51 11 1 816 421

4/71-7/77 RIGHT - 51 11 1 816 422

 

Then what I assume is the 1973 specific one as it has no dates:

LEFT - 51 11 1 814 701

RIGHT- 51 11 1 814 702

 

The only ones that are available from BMW are the 51 11 1 816 422, and both the 1973 ones...

 

I would go with the 73's if I wasn't planning on using the AMCO overrider bar that I got.  Anybody have some driver quality front overriders they would be willing let go that work with the outer rubber moldings?

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book. 

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results. 

I apologize for spreading misinformation.
