Good evening all,

Have been a lurker, occasional parts buyer and commenter for several years and finally getting close to paint on my 75 automatic inka. I had most mechanicals done before I started cancer treatment (car not me, fortunately ). I was going to do a build blog but have been spending so much time on car just havent had time, nor am I extremely computer savy. I am going to attempt to share some pics...

No its not awful, I will be spraying primer this weekend so those pics are early on in project. I did consider reinforcing rockers but chose to put it back as it came from factory. The list of replacements:

*Both rockers

*quarter panel/rear rocker panels

*quarter repair behind rear wheel

*fabricated patches for spare tire well

*fabricated new metal for all around gas tank

*Rebuilt rear subframe mounts

*Front floor pans

*A-pilar repairs

*Replacement fenders

*front air damn repair

*welded plates over where shocks from bumpers went. Have chrome bumper for rear.

So hoping all goes well from here, unfortunately I broke the near perfect windshield upon removal so I need to source a windshield and my beltline trim is a wreck..all in due time.

Well got some high build sprayed this evening...now back to block sanding tomorrow. Will build a more adequate paint booth for color and clear but I can now see where I am as far as bodywork. I can see some spots are better than I thought and some spots are problems and didnt even know!! Excited for color, would like to get it sprayed and diving one time before snow/salt, even if it just has a drivers seat!! Had a self imposed deadline of first week of November but that is unlikely now.

Anyone have good luck with any particular glass company? I am in need of windshield, dont think I will have them install it, just purchase from them..Thanks for any suggestions. Now a few bad pics...

Oh how I enjoy block sanding...feel like that is all I have been doing for last 4 weeks...block sanding...and I'm only at 220, still need to go 2 stages finer...not sure if block sanding can lead to mental disease or not...feel like I am getting somewhere now though. This is some of the nicest primer I have ever used though..very nice to work with. Evercoat 4:1. Good stuff.

Ok. Block sanding, check, complete, finito!! Well my buddy at work told me I needed to stop!! Every time I look I see something!! So I took his advice and started cleaning for remask, chip guard and finally paint!! Wooohooo!!

Thought I would show a few pics..I should have paid more attention to where chip guard was...

So I just did what I thought made sense, this is no "concours" just a car I love and want to last a long time.

Thought I would show a pic of most of the products used up to this point. I tried to put alot of thought into compatibility of all products, with the exception of the far right, which was more of a little gift to myself for block sanding completion.

In case I have never said I traded my beloved 1987 325is that was starting to have some tranny issues and always had electrical gremlins...although it was fast and pretty, the issues were getting old, no 1st gear and started popping out of second. So after some long hard thought I made a local Bimmer head a deal and came to own my "Orange Crush"

Thanks for listening. .

Good evening,

Well moving forward project I spent some time, not as much as I could have wetsanding clear and buffed out to a pretty decent finish, definitely a driver but for my second paint job its nice.

Went ahead and started some assembly. Put door strikes back on and adjusted, and then decided to put some of the back end together...

Then I took my turn signals inside for some good cleaning and resto..

Look alot better, so on the car they will go tomorrow.

Keep it fun,

Dave.

Just thought I would put out a quick update:

Car is coming together, cleaning parts as I reassemble, trying not to get frustrated with gaskets!! Color is growing on me even though it is not correct Inka, it is ok.

Decided it will need lowered, even though I am running large tires I think an inch wont hurt, any thoughts on 205/60/14's? I know they are a bit big but they are brand new from my E30 that is now gone. I rolled the fenders during body work to help aid clearance. I drove on them on this car for about 6 months before disassembly and one would rub a bit in reverse only, think I have a bushing worn.

I have attached a pic, hood is not latched (didnt realize until I came inside and looked at pic!!) Love the smooth front end with no bumper holes, for now. Got my new windshield from Pinkerton today now waiting on my gaskets...

Soooo a little work over the weekend. Got both rear wing windows in. Man those gasket are a royal PITA!!, so much so that this happened:

71aa2f5d0120a66dbaa869bb2eaa8743.jpg

Well 2 steps forward 3 steps back!! Hopefully I can touch up and blend in. Dang it!!

When I disassembled the car I had to drill out set screw on mirror so I tapped it out to next standard size, 1/4-20 and I am able to reuse it!! Also put drip rail trim on both side, which is a finicky task but done..as is antenna.

f7f45762937d10ebfe64f184389ab3e8.jpg

So my mechanical fuel pump was leaking fuel and I was having some issues with carb bowl boiling out so I thought I would kill 2 birds and install a electric fuel pump. So wired a relay under dash and ran wiring to trunk, removed plastic fuel line and used metal return line as my new supply and replaced all rubber lines with new. I know there has always been debate on where to install pump and I chose the trunk...and will be adding a crash switch for a little added protection.

5d30cf20bf34fb5fba7837090dd499c4.jpg

And it really cleans up engine bay too!! My friend that I race bikes with odly enough had a delete plate for the mechanical fuel pump spot on the head!! Yeah a freebie!!

44dbf8a3c30d3b6f8ed73cfa241d883e.jpg

So anyway gasket are to be here tomorrow and then away I go for state inspection and a nice drive........hopefully!!

Lovin' it...

Dave.

Hello all,

Well its assembled!!! Drove it for the first time in over 2 years of rebuilding!, is it perfect? No. Is it cool, does it put a cheesy grin on my face? Hell yes!!! I have a little low end carb adjustment to make, still need a few bits of trim and there are a few spot that could use some more cut and buff but I can do that as I want as it is in middle of panel and not near trim. I put the windows all in solo and it is surprisingly easy task, I did have a generous offer from Jmart to help but with my schedule I kinda have to do things when I get a window, hard to plan. Thanks Jeff, we will have to get together soon!! I may do a seperate post about glass install and how I went about it.

I did use URO gaskets on everything. Windows front and rear glass seem to fit ok to me, original back glass was tougher install than the new Pinkerton glass front windshield, which was a breeze, under a half hour. The doors on the other hand, install was easy once you get a rythem and system of sanded off paint sticks... the window glass adjustments took a while to get it where I didnt think it was going to break my vent/A pillar window frames. Takes an athorative whack to close doors. It is ok though. So here are some pics of window install....

So this picture is after gasket is placed on windshield, pretty self explanatory getting gasket on, what this does show is a cheap mechanical pencil taken apart so that it is just a rigid plastic tube with the rope in it which makes this step much more civil...

93dde488572a1ba1a16812b4ea9f3422.jpg

This pic shows rope partly put in groove..and taped to windshield..

485e70689e08e3194218f7df6d904ce4.jpg

This next pic shows both ends of rope taped, numbered so I know which to pull first. (One overlaps the other..did it matter? Who knows)

2c6e7267e822c01a2b7074c161cc8a64.jpg

This pic show my safety device, as when everything is soaped up I just about slipped windshield out!!

644805675e2ae9f2ecde04925dab9f87.jpg

3bc0efaf3e0bdf7e6bc0d69964909d1b.jpg

I just started at bottom, of course ensuring that was lined up and slowly worked my way around until I got halfway up side...lotsa glancing blows with open WEDDING RINGLESS HANDS (thanks glass guys for that tip!!) And worked it down as far as you can, cause if the bottom and lower corners arent in nuthin is going in!! Worked my way around until got to top and the last 12 inches is tough until there is a definite thud, and bobs your uncle!! Few more slaps to further seat gaskets and your good...

So here are some not so great camera phone pics..

Do you have more pictures of this repair?  I am trying to replicate the same piece (on both sides, of course) and the curves and getting it to fit into the fenders properly is driving me crazy.  Any tips would be appreciated.

thanks,

Bruce.

Let me check when I get home, may have some more pics on digital camera. It is a tricky bit, i tried to retain as much of factory to make patterns and lots of posterboard patterns. Definitely helps to have grills and fenders handy to check along the way. Which area is giving you the most issue??

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains.
