ah, just weld 'em up.

Differentials are just one- wheel- drive anyway!

If you can find a 320 diff, the spiders in those are quite a bit tougher...

Okay, order placed for some Castrol Axle Z Limited Slip 90. Unfortunately wont be here for a few days, but this will allow me to ditch the Arse Dragging Spax springs and replace with some OE ones;

With the Half shafts, and ARB detached and the hand brake off, you can easily fit the OE springs without compressing them;

Its just a case of setting the lower spring seat correctly so the notch on the underside sits on the dimple on the trailing arm, then threading the spring into place and sitting it lined up on the spring seat, then twisting the top mound to line up with the cut end of the spring and jacking the trailing arm up until you can reattach the shock. Its much easier doing it that writing about it.

Take the cup off your trolley jack and use a block of 4x2. Keep you jack to the inside to give enough room to slip the shock off and on its lower mounting stud.

Marshall, thank you.

Just noticed that the lower spring seat has twisted a bit!!! But no matter, I anticipate having to cut the springs half a coil to get the ride height (stance) just right.

Maurice, its an E28 fuel pump from my collection, but whether its a 520i, 525e or 528i or from an E30, I not sure. There are two different pumps and it depends on whether there is an in tank pump or not. Most European M10 & M20 engined E28s dont have an in tank pump. I need to to remove the surge tank and replace with a fuel filter ah la an E28. The strange thing abount the E28 is, that the filter goes after the pump!!!

The pump on this E28 has its rubber cover intact.

E28s are just big 02s underneath!

Not strange at all, it is the engineering preferred place. Strainers go before the pump.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Understood that there is a strainer in the tank, but the E28/E30 pump doesnt have a inlet cone filter as the tii pump has. Perhaps I should have said “interestingly” rather than “strangely”.

Was that a coin in the bottom of the housing? Some Copper Oxide trick to improving gear oil life?

It does look like a pfennig, but its only the drain plug, disappointingly, otherwise it would be in the Rare Objects thread. Old diff on the right with its drain plug. The new diff on the left, has it on the right side of the casing, not underneath.

Really gathering a head of steam now, Diff painted and fitted!

Half shafts and exhaust, refill new diff, then we are good to go.

On another note, I really dont like all this black undercoating. Its a really dingy place to wield a spanner under there. On the otherhand it does seem to be very effective as theres little evidence of rust, which is a miracle for a UK car. It spent most of its early life in the fair county of Somerset (where the cider comes from), which may account for this.

Depending upon the material it is and how well stuck to the body it is, you could always prime it and put body colour top coats on. I would be happy with rust free.

    BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

    Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

    History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

    In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

    BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
