cleaning up the rust on headrest posts

The previous owner did a great job restoring the interior of my recently purchased 1975, but I discovered ugly rust on the headrest posts when I raised the headrests up to a useful level.  See the rust in this picture:

Has anyone ever come up with a way of removing the rust and leaving a nicer-looking set of posts?

Try some light oil like WD40 and a wadded up ball of aluminum tin foil . Scrub hard and then polish off with a soft cloth. I can't really see how bad your rust is but this works well when the chrome is only pinholed and the rust staining comesu p and tarnishes the good chrome surface.

Start workin' the steel wool but try to not look like you're havin' a good time

 

This - I needed to undo the back panel of the seats and hammer the headrests out as they were rusted in.  The steel wool worked great!
