Axle shaft CV joint inner snap ring. Do I need this?

Hi, I am installing my new Ireland Engineering CV joints and can't get the outer circlip on because the shaft doesn't extend through the cv enough to expose the groove. Can I delete inner ring so I can get more bite on the outer ring?

Thanks

Chris

you woudln't want the spline moving in and out on the car, it would cook your cv pretty quick.  if you take a 1" coupler for steel plumbing it will fit on the end perfectly so you can hit it down with a rubber mallet (with the shaft in a vice so not to put pressure on the cv).  careful you dont go to far, just enough to get the snap ring on.

I have tried all of the above suggestions. It simply won't sit down far enough for the outer retaining clip to grab the groove. It's about .5mm from going, about the thickness of the inner ring. Not sure what's next. I know I need the outer clip.

Are you sure cupped washer on the shaft points upwards toward the CV joint?
When I put the E21 inner joint on my 02 shaft, the extra washer didn't fit either.  I don't have the washer in the inner assembly now and haven't for at least 30K miles.

A radiator shop is a good place to take a leak.

I have no idea what I'm doing but I know I'm really good at it.

Agreed- leave the inner spacer out if it won't go back together.

The spline depth changed several times on the halfshafts, and that means that some

combos don't work.  There was a good thread many years ago, but I don't remember the

conclusions about what got what when- but there are some combos (very early shaft, late 2002 cv, maybe?)

that don't fit together.  Oddly, the E21 always seems to, if you leave out that spacer.

There are references to washers and bell washers in the above replies. There is an inner retaining ring that sits in a groove on the inside limit of the splines and a circlip in a groove on the outboard side of the spline. This is where my issue is, with the inner clip installed, I can't get the cv joint to seat far enough to allow the installation of the outboard c clip. Maybe we are taking about the same thing.

I too deleted the inner washer when making E21/ 2002 hybrid half shafts. I ran into a similar issue and was instructed to delete the inner washer to get the proper space for the end snap ring.  Good luck!

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,
