Genuine BMW is best, but if price is an issue, you can also order aftermarket glass / and have it installed by any vendor/chain that carries "Pilkington" brand glass. In Pittsburgh, I used "Windshields of America" and it was well under $200 for the glass, and I installed it myself. Pilkington lists and still offers front windshields for our cars. All 2002s after 1971/72 generally have a very slightly tinted glass - you might need to specify when ordering.

how does genuine BMW glass differ from glass from another reputable glass supplier...just curious because you don't say why it's best

Another good source of windshield glass (and other glass for the 2002) is Walloth & Nesch:

http://www.wallothnesch.com/catalog/category/view/s/bmw-1502-2002-turbo/id/11750/

Shipping can be a little pricey, but quick, and if you wait for that 20 Euro discount that they offer, it offsets some of that cost.  The US Dollar is much stronger lately against the Euro so that makes it a better buy as well, and they are currently running a promotion on glass.

I recently bought a full set of glass from W&N and the quality is excellent.  I opted for duplicates of my original glass tint, with a dark green "sun visor" tint running across the top section of the windshield.

Regards, Maurice.

Does anyone know if the locking strips for the front and rear are the same?

Interesting that the link that ray_ provided shows the chrome ones come in two different lengths:

I just sourced a front windshield from

Safelight for around $240. I'd of gotten it from the dealer but I didn't wanna wait 3 weeks for shipping from Germany. The list price is $314

And I get 30% off so I actually paid more to get it sooner.

Here's a crazy question

I installed the rear windshield myself

But I used the front window gasket without realizing because I'm a big moron.

The fit was nice and tight. However I have not installed the locking strip yet because I'm still waiting for the tool. Has anyone else made this mistake?

Will I be removing the rear windshield

To redo it.

I'm concerned.

Sorry to hijack the thread.

Thx,

Tony

Carefully remove back window and use proper rubber. You shouldn't have much trouble removing it now.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
