Help Car Died

wrapping up my rehab and decided to take a test drive. got engine running and idled for about 5 minute ran great. then took it on the road and went about 1/2 mile and the car died. thought it might be out gas but put gas in it and it wouldn't start. Got it home and there is power our of the blue coil but no spark seems to be coming out of the end of the spark plug wire. i installed an IE distributer and i think the problem lies with it. any thoughts that can help me?

Ignition works by applying a voltage to the coil and then interrupting it at precise times to align with the compression stroke of each cylinder. This is typically done using points or in your case a solid state ignition. As you rotate the engine on the starter this should be cutting and applying the voltage to the coil. If you put a bulb or volt meter from the negative terminal of the coil and ground, this should show if the ignition module is switching or not. A digital multi-meter may not respond fast enough but you should see it jumping around as opposed to a steady state 12v or 0v. A dwell meter will also show the same thing.

Check the wiring between the distributor and the coil, this is generally wired so the two wires go to the + and - terminals on the coil. Check the magnetic collar under the distributor cap to make sure that this is fully seated on the shaft. These things are quite temperamental and if your coil resistance doesn't match you can burn them out.

I also melted the "wire" inside the rotor & my car started to run badly, the top of the rotor looked rough , almost cooked.

i just went on the Ireland website and it looks like they no longer sell the distributor. Maybe there was an issue with them? Maybe they are just out of stock.

i was told the ireland distributor worked with the bosch blue coil. So i hope nothing got fried.

I also melted the "wire" inside the rotor & my car started to run badly, the top of the rotor looked rough , almost cooked.

x2 that^^^^ cooked a wire off the coil same crap running condition
