Cheap 320I - Strip Or Drive?

Just bought a 320i cheap. I've been looking for a 5sd to put in my 68 2002. This car is mechanically in great shape. The body isn't that bad either. Should I drive it a while before I rob all the goodies? A paint job and some Euro bumpers and this would be a nice ride.

Thx, Jerry

I am in the same boat. Bought a 320is and took the recaros, tranny, and drive shaft out for the 5 speed swap on my 02 then I had to unexpectedly ship the car to Colorado to be painted because an opening became available. So the body is in good shape and instead of giving it away or sending it to scrap, since no one has given any interest in the shell, I was going to swap something else in but it seems the 02 will be a while so I am putting the parts back on and making it a driver until I move up to Colorado next year. So I won't be having my 02 until then. If I still had the 2002 here I would put the E21 parts on it. If that answers your question. :P

Best regards.

Photograph it.  Post pics.

Drive it.

     DISCLAIMER

I now disagree with some of the timing advice I have given in the past.  I misinterpreted the distributor curves in the Blue Book.

I've switched from using ported-vacuum to manifold, with better results.

I apologize for spreading misinformation.

E21s are friends, not food.  But they used to be.  (I called my last E21 parts car Nemo.)

Some are still parts cars, rusty, beat, dented and in need of everything.  But some that we used to scrap for 2002 parts are too nice to cut up. And there aren't that many around anymore.

Guess what?  E30s are worse  No longer can you find a runner for $500 to part out or use as an M20 donor to a 2002.

Beater non-runner eta 4-door with automatics are fetching $1500.

In a nutshell, if it's running and does not need much work, by all means DRIVE IT!!!!!

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
