Moving And Lost My Keys! Hotwire Help!

We are moving down the hill into a new home and I need some fast advice. I lost my keys last winter - yes dumb. No local locksmith will rekey since it is a a bmw. It is a 1975 2002. I am wondering if anyone has advice on hotwiring or starting without the key so I can get it into my new garage. Otherwise I will have to get it towed.

Thanks!

Jonesy

Thanks,

Casey

Hot wiring is easy....  it's bypassing the steering lock that I haven't mastered yet.

If you don't already have AAA Plus, you should get it.  That'll get you a tow to the next garage, and a tow home from the pits at the race track, or anywhere else you break your car.

Super simple, all you need is a piece of wire long enough to go from the positive terminal of the battery to the positive terminal on the coil. Then all you have to do is crank the starter and you can do that with a paper clip using the diagnostic plug (make sure it is in neutral).  but you may find out that when you turn the wheel more than a quarter turn the wheel will lock, then you will be screwed.

I carry a piece of wire with ends crimped on it for just this reason, if your electrical system is acting up you can bypass it all with one piece of wire and at least get home.

bridge pins 1 and 7 to crank the starter.

I got my car with out keys.  Pull the passenger door handle, pick up the phone and start calling.  I think the blank is listed as BMW1 where I got mine, which was a place that has been around since key were invented.  They were able to find the code. Picked them up 1/2 day later, $30 CDN and I had two keys.  I would have gotten more, but I got the last 2.

I've been eying the diag plug up, but haven't tried playing with it.

Good to know about the 1 to 7.

Would 1 to 2 power the ignition?  Could the diag machine actually start and run the car?  If yes, then there has to be a combo that would keep it running.

Good Luck with the keys.

And...if you're lucky, the little adhesive paper tag with the key number on it is still stuck to the back side of the ignition switch.  Takes a little contorting (or a small mirror) to read, but a lot easier than removing a door handle!

Bridging 1 to 2 on the diag plug will allow the car to start but it will energize the entire switched circuit and doing that through such a small gauge wire would be ill advised, if you tried to turn on the headlights it would probably overload and burn up.

BMW Neue Klasse - a birth of a Sports Sedan

Unveiling of the Neue Klasse Unveiled in 1961, BMW 1500 sedan was a revolutionary concept at the outset of the '60s. No tail fins or chrome fountains. Instead, what you got was understated and elegant, in a modern sense, exciting to drive as nearly any sports car, and yet still comfortable for four.   The elegant little sedan was an instant sensation. In the 1500, BMW not only found the long-term solution to its dire business straits but, more importantly, created an entirely new

History of the BMW 2002 and the 02 Series

In 1966, BMW was practically unknown in the US unless you were a touring motorcycle enthusiast or had seen an Isetta given away on a quiz show.  BMW’s sales in the US that year were just 1253 cars.  Then BMW 1600-2 came to America’s shores, tripling US sales to 4564 the following year, boosted by favorable articles in the Buff Books. Car and Driver called it “the best $2500 sedan anywhere.”  Road & Track’s road test was equally enthusiastic.  Then, BMW took a cue from American manufacturers,

    The BMW 2002 Production Run

BMW 02 series are like the original Volkswagen Beetles in one way (besides both being German classic cars)—throughout their long production, they all essentially look alike—at least to the uninitiated:  small, boxy, rear-wheel drive, two-door sedan.  Aficionados know better.   Not only were there three other body styles—none, unfortunately, exported to the US—but there were some significant visual and mechanical changes over their eleven-year production run.   I’ve extracted t
